Feeds pellets and free flowing bulk ingredients:

Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeder

For gravimetric metering of pellets and free flowing bulk ingredients in plastics processing and compounding processes Brabender Technologie has developed the Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeder featuring a completely novel feeding technology offering remarkable advantages over conventional screw feeders with these bulk materials.

Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeder

The design features a vertical metering screw mounted on a horizontal rotating disc. These are arranged in a specially shaped outlet made of conductive polyurethane, which is transparent for visual inspection. A tubular cast PUR insert slipped on the screw serves as a screw tube. The disc and screw are driven by a collectorless DC motor featuring the characteristics of a servo motor, which is equipped with a CAN bus interface for connection to the controller.

The entire unit as a whole is the actual metering feeder. It is connected with a component part carrier via a lowering mechanism, which also includes the load cell. The carrier is either included in the scope of supply or provided by the customer. Cover options available for the storage hopper include safety grids, laid-on covers with handles for manual refilling, covers with inlet pipes for automatic refilling and elasticated filter cloth covers.

Improved Performance

Beside space-saving compact design on account of the short inlet-outlet distance the feeder offers considerably improved feeding performance because the vertical arrangement results in reliable solid flow and a constant screw filling level of virtually 100 % - the prerequisite to utmost feeding accuracy and constancy. In addition the feeding principle ensures a pulsation-free discharge over the entire feed rate range due to optimum grain distribution around the circumference of the disc.

Feed Rates

With only two standard models Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeders cover a total feed rate range up to 5600 dm/hr, while the feed rate of each model can be varied within a turndown ratio of 100:1.

ThreeFlex Handling System

An outstanding feature of the Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeder is the ThreeFlex Handling System allowing cleaning and bulk ingredient changeover without any tools in just three work steps.

Step 1: Lowering

After unlocking two quick release clamps the feed unit slides down and separates from the storage hopper, which remains in place held by spring clamps. The polyurethane outlet can now be turned by 360° into any desired discharge position, while the integrated handles allow non-slip handling. For hopper emptying the locking bolt at the component part carrier is pulled so that the outlet slides down and clears the cross section of the PUR insert. As a result, the ingredient flows off. Of course the feed unit can also be lifted and arrested again after having turned the outlet so as to allow ingredient discharge in the discharge position chosen by means of the metering screw.

Step 2: Cleaning

For cleaning the entire outlet unit is swung out to the side allowing unrestricted access to the feeder interior. The screw and the polyurethane insert can be removed. The storage hopper held by the spring clamps can also be taken off for cleaning. Wet cleaning of the hopper and also of the feed unit is possible thanks to the high enclosure protection (IP65) of the 24V motor.

Step 3: Ingredient Changeover

In case feed rates also have to be changed when changing over from one ingredient to another, screws and PUR inserts are interchangeable for adaptation to varying requirements. However, due to the huge turndown ratio of 100:1 a replacement is required rather seldom. Otherwise the ScrewDisc® Feeder is made ready for operation again after cleaning by carrying out the steps described above in reverse order.

Multi-Component Feeding Stations

Primarily for feeding of free flowing bulk ingredients in extrusion processes in the secondary plastics industry, e. g. for the production of flat sheet and deep-drawn films, profiles, pipes, synthetic fibers, etc. but also for compounding processes multi-component feeding stations are used. These comprise up to 8 Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeders arranged in very compact configuration on a common support structure. Depending on their respective degree of extension, these stations are optionally equipped with automatic refill systems such as storage hoppers with refill valves or pneumatic loaders. For flood feeding of single screw extruders a version is available equipped with a weighed extruder inlet hopper under the station ensuring unvarying intake conditions.

With all the advantages of the ScrewDisc® system

Multi-component feeding stations benefit from the advantages of the Brabender ScrewDisc® Feeder to a particularly great extent:

- Utmost accuracy due to ScrewDisc® principle and gravimetric mode of operation

- Compact dimensions with shortest inlet-outlet distances

- ThreeFlex Handling System (1 - lowering, 2 - cleaning , 3 - ingredient changeover)

- Free choice of discharge position due to feeder outlet slewable by 360°

The gravimetric mode of operation with digital control by Brabender microcomputer controllers does not only result in high accuracy but also in acquisition and registration of data relevant to the feeding process such as material consumption, actual values, fault conditions, etc. Registration is required for quality assurance purposes and for certification of your company as per DIN ISO.
