Job Specification

Business (Job) Title: Particle Technology Scientist

I.JOB PURPOSE - Reason for Position

Provide particle technology support to R&D and Operations group through a demonstrated understanding of particle (1) synthesis, (2) properties, and (3) platforms. This position is a key interface between directing the early development and use of strategic particles to the securing of supply for those critical chains. An understanding will also be required as to how variations in these properties might affect key polishing characteristics. Additional guidance will be expected with respect to appropriate analytical methods development activities for particles.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

R&D/Commercialization Support (90%)

This responsibility is to act as a particle-based technical liaison to the development teams, commercialization and procurement groups. Work closely with development teams, early in the cycle, to establish the proper guidance and focus to particle technology choices and impacts. Management of particle development programs is also be a part of this role.

Direct engineered abrasives development activities.

Particle technology support for early development activities.

Impact felt across all development programs.

Procurement Support (10%)

A strong presence is required to provide technical guidance in the form of particle-based:

Proactive support for supply chain management.

Own the technical representation of supplier risk assessment.

Own the technical issues on supplier excellence programs.

JDA ownership and support.

III.CRITICAL COMPETENCIES

Technical: Strong background in a technical discipline-Ph.D. preferred (e.g. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related field). Core competency in the synthesis-property-structure relationship for various particle technologies; Colloid science a part of general skillset; General exposure to analytical methods used for characterization of various particle properties; Ability to focus and summarize complex data sets towards key decision points (actions).

Business/Managerial: Ability to supervise one or two employees; Good interpersonal and supervisory skills; Ability to organize teams toward a specific project and goals; Good understanding of business and strategic impacts from technical positions.

Behavioral: Ability to plan, organize, supervise and execute complex research projects; Superior written and oral communication skills; Good team player with an ability to integrate across multiple fronts; Strong leadership qualities.

Computer: Advanced; experienced with databases and Microsoft Windows.

IV.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Education: Ph.D. (preferred) in a technical discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or related field).

Experience: Strong colloidal science background with 5+ years of demonstrated performance required; strong hands-on research work in an industrial environment is preferred.
