Wood Chip handling system

Posted in: , on 27. Jan. 2005 - 08:47

Wiilow Creek Energy solutions is a moch firm, we are a group of Senior Mechanical Engineers at the University of Wyoming. We are currently working on designing a wood chip handling sytem for catalytic combustion type burning system. The project site is a small school in Colorado.

Goals:

1) Transfer wood chips for outside of building to any one of 3 bins inside.

2) Achive correct moister content

3) move chips from one of the 3 bins to the burner feed hopper

4) Ensure that oversize chips do not enter the feed hopper

5) Reduce size of oversized chips, for re-use

Advice on any of these goals would be greatly appreciated.

To assist responses perhaps you can indicate :

1) specification of wood chips, size mm or inches, shape and loose bulk density, kg per cubic metre or pounds per cubic foot

2) the size of your inside bins, cubic metres or cubic feet

3) the rate of transfer from the bins to the burner, cubic metres per hour or cubic feet per hour

4) the rate of transfer from the outside to the inside bins, cubic metres per hour or cubic feet per hour

5) the percentage (approximate) oversize material to be screened out and reduced in size

I would be concerned that your reference to a "small school" may mean that the equipment cost is disproportionate to the amount of chips to be handled.

Dear Jerrod,

You may like to discuss your application with a company named Rader Pneumatics, located in Atlanta, GA. They make wood chip handling equipment, chunk and chip cutting rotary valves, and have extensive experience in conveying and handling wood chips. They have a web page also.

Dear MR. Jerrodi,

You have not given the enough data to design the system as indicated by Mr. Peter. Please submit all those. But for your information that I have designed 650mm conveyor belt for handling wood chip of 30mm size in Bhutan Ferro-alloys plant.

Regards.

Dear Jerrod

The basics that you require are:

1) Transfer wood chips for outside of building to any one of 3 bins inside. - Use a front end loader, walking floor, chain floor or travelling screw depending upon what sort of storage you have and what sort of capacity you require.

2) Achive correct moister content - Online sampling is available from many firms.

3) move chips from one of the 3 bins to the burner feed hopper - Unless there is a prospect of ice on the belts there is no reason why conventional belt conveyors should not be used.

4) Ensure that oversize chips do not enter the feed hopper - simple scalper screen is all that is required. The design of the feed hopper is very important otherwise the chips will not come out.

5) Reduce size of oversized chips, for re-use - Oversize from scalper should be fed into a re-chipper (very Noisy), hammer mill or shredder. Re-chipper makes quite a lot of fines which you may not want.

You may wish to consider our DSI Snake Sandwich high-angle conveyors to continuously elevate your wood chips. Our system hugs the wood chips gently yet firmly between smooth surfaced rubber belts. The material quality is preserved and the material is elevated efficiently with very low power consumption. Please visit our web site for more on our DSI Snakes. At the home page also click on the "ftp site" where you will find various fliers (in pdf format). I direct your particular attantion to the flier "Wood Chips-No Cost Solution".
