Material Handling from hanger to pier

Posted in: , on 15. May. 2006 - 15:20

Dear All

We plan on building a hanger in a sea port in Egypt. The hanger area is approximately 6000 sq meters.

The material to be handled is Quartz lumps, where the size ranges from 0 - 120mm.

We need to convey the material from inside the hanger to the pier which is about 120m away.

What is the ideal material handling method putting in mind that dust must be avoided at all cost.

your comments are highly appreciated

best regards

Dear Sherif ,The best way to convey the material from inside the hanger to the pier which is about 120m away, is by a Pipe conveyor,I know the distance is less but best suitable for dust pollution.

Dear Mr. Sherif Shenouda,

You intend to convey lumpy quartz size 0 - 120 mm. Considering the size indicated by you, the material will be mainly composed of granules and lumps and quantum of fines would be very limited. It seems you can convey the material by the following means :

1) Regular trough belt conveyor. The belt conveyor is to be placed in totally enclosed gallery. You can choose somewhat lower speed for the belt conveyor. The belt conveyor itself will not create any dust, for the material you have mentioned and speed likely to be used. Dust creation will be only at the discharge point. The leakage of this in air to be prevented by dust control equipment. The regular conveyor placed in enclosed gallery will be very easy to attend, inspect, etc.

2) The other option is to have pipe conveyor, In this the material will be conveyed in enclosed condition in rubber belt. The dust generated at discharge ends is the same as for regular conveyor. You have not mentioned the capacity of conveying, but if you go by lump size, you will have a trough conveyor type feature for about 12 - 13 m near tail end and 12 - 13 m near head end. This leaves the actual pipe conveyor for about 95 m length. In case you have longer feed length, then actually length of pipe zone would be correspondingly less.

You can decide equipment type as per your preference and choice. For material of this nature and conveying length, possibly above are the suitable methods.
