Duesseldorf, Germany - Every four years the plant engineering company LOESCHE invites its customers and business partners from industries such as cement, coal, steel or mineral, to their Symposium which offers a platform to introduce the latest technological developments within the LOESCHE-Group as well as share experiences about LOESCHE products already installed at various plants worldwide.

This year’s LOESCHE Symposium was held on 25-26 September 2014 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Düsseldorf, Germany. Over 350 guests from 55 countries took part in this two-day lecture event with accompanying exhibition. Numerous suppliers that had been particularly associated with LOESCHE over the years, such as the companies Scheuch from Aurolzmünster (Austria), expert for air and environmental technology, IKN GmbH from Neustadt, Schade/Aumund from Gelsenkirchen, Ventilatorenfabrik Oelde GmbH from Oelde, BEUMER Group from Beckum, Kreisel GmbH & Co. KG from Kauschwitz and Renk AG from Augsburg, presented their products and services at the exhibition, which was located next to the lecture room. 24 lectures were offered to the very interested audience in the two days of Symposium each followed by an evening event with all participants.

After a warm welcome by LOESCHE’s CEO Dr. Thomas Loesche, Dr. Daniel Strohmeyer, director of Process Technology, updated the delegates about the latest developments in LOESCHE grinding technology. Product development in the company is primarily driven by product requirements, environmental considerations and resource limits of cement production. He explained the trends towards larger mill sizes such as LOESCHE’s LM 70.4+4 and 70.5 and the need for improved performance, which is delivered by its new LDC classifier. The first LM 70.4+4 mill was sold to the Holcim Group in 2013. Erection of the mill which will be driven by a COPE gearbox is sheduled for the end of 2015.

Peter Boiger of Renk followed on, focusing on one specific feature for LOESCHE Mills, the COPE drive (Compact Planetary Electric). He highlighted the equipment’s higher availability and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

A networking coffee break gave all attendees the opportunity to make new contacts, exchange ideas, and catch up on the news with friends and colleagues. The exhibition stalls generated a great interest and further interaction between the attendees.

The program continued with Prof. Horst-Michael Ludwig of the Bauhaus University, Weimar and Dr. Holger Wulfert from LOESCHE who introduced one of LOESCHE’s latest research results and explained the process of producing high quality binder from steelmaking slags. CO2-emissions have to be reduced within the cement industry. Turning liquid slag into a reactive material can be one solution for the problem.

Dr. Gerald Wimmer of Siemens VAI, Austria, explained the innovative approach for LD (Linz-Donauwitz) slag valorisation to reduce clinker factors in the cement-making process. The company’s technology will enable the use of LD slag in the production of cement, effectively reducing the clinker factor and thus bring down specific CO2 emissions, he explained. Moreover, the effective use of LD slag will reduce the slag’s negative impact on the environment as landfill or other disposal options will be no longer required to the same extent, Dr. Wimmer added.

LOESCHE’s grinding technology also enjoyed support from the industry as reflected by a series of presentations from leading cement producers.

Alexander Flacher, who heads Holcim Group Support, took visitors through the history of VRMs used in clinker grinding by the Swiss cement producer. The company operates at present 33 VRMs, of which 17 were supplied by LOESCHE.

After a communication- and lunch break Dr. Dirk Spenner, MD of Spenner Zement, discussed the operating experience of the first VRM for GBFS grinding at the cement plant in Duisburg. This presentation was also supposed to give inside information as a plant visit to the Spenner plant in Duisburg, including the LOESCHE VRM 46.2+2 took place with all interested participants on Saturday as part of the weekend program.

One highlight of the day was the presentation of Southern Province Cement Co. from Saudi Arabia, which has been held by Mr. Bashar Sweidan on behalf of Southern Province Cement Co. The company was the first in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia who installed a Vertical Roller Mill for cement grinding. This VRM was delivered by LOESCHE. Bashar Sweidan informed the audience about the satisfaction of the company and their plans for further investments in further cement lines with LOESCHE Mills.

Radwan Mouakat of National Cement Co, UAE, explained the cost savings obtained due to the company’s fuel conversion project from HFO to pulverised coal.

This presentation was followed by Onur Ataky from Sintek, reflected on the change of preferences that sees VRMs take the centre-stage rather than the traditional ball mill.

Following the afternoon coffee break in the exhibition area LOESCHE’s Andr Baetz and Dr. Holger Wulfert as well as Dr. Andreas Jungmann of Cala presented their paper “Dry selective communition and sorting of concrete rubble – The end of downcycling of crushed concrete, by usage of LOESCHE Mill”.

Dr. Jungmann and Dr. Wulfert stayed on the stage for their next presentation together with Carsten Gerold, also from LOESCHE and Dr. Schiffers, Cala, about the production of high value metal products and construction materials from steel slag and waste material by using selective comminution and dry sorting.

The final paper of the day was given by Matthias Mersmann of aixergee. He highlighted process optimisation in the cement industry and received a good feedback.

For the evening a Gala Dinner was organized in the Ballroom of the Hyatt hotel. This offered an excellent opportunity to meet many more participants from around the globe and for operators to exchange views and experiences.

The second day’s program commenced with Dr. Daniel Camarasa who gave the interested audience a general outlook of the cement industry in Africa.

Pieter Jacobs followed with “15 years of successful operation of a LOESCHE VRM type LM 50.4 in a hard rock application in Phalaborwa”.

Olivier Thomas and Pierre Wlodarzyk of LOESCHE introduced the company’s new ‘Operation and Maintenance’ business line, which sees the equipment supplier provide a multi-level maintenance and repair service through the entire lifecycle of a cement producer’s installed grinding mills, ensuring smooth operation and maximum uptime.

A view from India was offered by M. Srinivasan of Madras Cement and V.S. Narang of My Home Industries after the coffee break. They advised the audience on their operating experiences with LOESCHE Mills in their companies’ applications.

ZKG’s Dr. Hubert Baier sketched a general view on future alternative fuel trends, effectively introducing a series of papers offered by A TEC specialists which were given in the afternoon session after the lunch break.

A TEC, the Austrian pyroprocess expert, since 2010 part of the LOESCHE Group, extended LOESCHE’s product portfolio in recent years by several specific products in the area of plant optimization and alternative fuel use.

The company’s new chain mill was introduced by Johannes Uttinger from A TEC. Mr. Müllner described impressively that the mill was already driven to 70 % with alternative fuels from waste, two weeks after commisioning. This gives a holistic substitution rate of 88 %.

The burner especially designed for this purpose by A TEC GRECO promises even higher substitution rates in the future, as explained by Joel Maia, A TEC GRECO in its presentation.

Dr. Stefan Kern followed by presenting A TEC’s “State of the Art”-Technology “NOx reduction below 200 mg/Nm“.

The complete removal of waste materials was explained jointly by Johannes Müllner, A TEC and Ernst-Michael Sipple, Holcim Emerging Europe with their report of the first operation experience in the industrial plant in Rohonk. Each year they are able to sell 4.000 tons of industrial minerals produced out of 20.000 tons bypassdust.

Finally Friedrich Willitsch from A TEC and Holger Reinhold from Scheuch, explained ways to reduce mercury emissions in the cement industry with a new system which will be commisooned by the end of this year.

Dr. Thomas Loesche then formally closed this most interesting and stimulating symposium, which brought experts to Germany from around the world.

The evening continued with an enjoyable boat trip on the river Rhine which gave the participants the opportunity to see the “Media Harbour” with the Hyatt hotel at the front, from a different view.

Weekend program part I: Spenner plant visit in Duisburg

The two-days lecture program was followed by a plant visit in Duisburg on Saturday, for all interested customers to introduce the Loesche Mill for slag grinding (LM 46.2+2).

Weekend program part II: “Alternative-Fuels-Sightseeing Tour

This plant visit was followed by another one on the same day: after visiting Spenner Zement in Duisburg, the Symposium participants went straight to the airport and started a 2-days trip to Austria.

Dr. Guenter Waldl from Leube Zement welcomed the participants in Gartenau near Salzburg and introduced, together with Dr. Guenther Schwaiger from A TEC, the outstanding modernization of Leube’s Gartenau plant, which was done within 15 month construction period only.

After a presentation about the construction process and a visit to the plant, the participants could enjoy the evening in Salzburg with a sightseeing tour in the city center and a joint dinner.

Plant visit in Wietersdorf

On the next day, the trip continued to the South of Austria. The participants had the chance to visit Wietersdorf plant in Carinthia. At the plant, A TEC’s experts Johannes Uttinger and Joel Maia showed the latest product developments directly at the plant - the Rocket Mill and Flexiflame EcoPro® burner, which were presented to the audience in Duesseldorf two days earlier.

Well over half of the participants documented their interest in the A TEC technology already after seeing the plant. No wonder because especially in the area of alternative fuels in cement plants A TEC could show their expertise in Wietersdorf. Thus, the cement plant was fired by 88 % with waste material (RDF) at that day. This is world record!

The Wietersdorfer & Peggauer Zementwerke GmbH was a great host on that weekend. They have treated the LOESCHE guests after the tours with local delicacies.

The trip ended with a visit of the beautiful castle of Hochosterwitz before Dr. Loesche as well as LOESCHE’s and A TEC’s experts said farewell to the Symposium’s participants.
