INTERNATIONAL FERTILISER SOCIETY CONFERENCE 13-15 DECEMBER 2006

'PHOSPHORUS: ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES AND BEST PRACTICE FOR AN ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT', to be held at Robinson College, Cambridge, UK.

No doubt you have the dates for the IFS Conference in your diary, but please find attached details of the papers and a registration form. We anticipate another valuable and enjoyable Conference, and look forward to receiving completed Registration forms as soon as possible, to help with the organisation. Please contact the Secretary if you have any special requirements, such as a double room or a special diet.

I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you in Cambridge, if possible.

Regards,

Chris Dawson

'Phosphorus: Environmental Challenges and Best Practice for an Essential Nutrient'

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all crops and animals, and was perhaps the first to be industrially processed as a fertiliser. Now that the serious P deficiencies in the soil have been overcome, at least in the developed world, attention is being focussed on issues other than the role of P in crop and animal production. This Conference has been designed to re-examine the fundamental nutritional importance of P, and at the same time to look at the other issues of importance today. We will hear an introductory overview from IFA, followed by an examination of the issues and opportunities associated with the manufacturing by-product, phosphogypsum. After looking at P in the plant and in the soil, we will discuss the management of P from a number of sources in the context of protecting the wider environment from unwanted nutrient enrichment. We will conclude by reviewing the best practice for phosphorus fertilisation on farm.

The Society's residential Conferences provide a forum for discussion and an opportunity for delegates to make new contacts and to renew old acquaintances.

The Conference in Cambridge in 2005 was attended by delegates from over 24 countries, and a large gathering is anticipated for this year's event.

THE VENUE

Robinson College, Cambridge, has been a regular venue for this Conference because of its in-house

rooms and conference facilities, the excellent food and the convivial atmosphere. Cambridge is directly accessible by road and rail, and London Stansted airport is about half an hour away.

Delegates are accommodated in College in modern rooms with full en suite facilities, and have ample

opportunity to meet formally and informally during the Conference.
