Melco, part of Rulmeca Group, installs 72 motorised pulleys

Conveyor equipment manufacturing company Melco, South Africa, says that, since introducing its motorised pulleys two years ago, it has sold and installed 72 motorised pulleys into various South African industries.

“There has been positive feedback from our clients, which is evident in the significant interest in the product, which saves space because it is compactable, lighter and concentrically mounted on the structure, has low noise levels and saves energy,” says Melco motorised pulley product manager Julian Steinmann.

Melco has made considerably large investments in its roller and structure factories, with the most significant being the acquisition of a plasma cutter in South Africa. This has improved the flow of components in the structure plant, he adds.

Melco says that it is looking to further invest in equipment in the near future, but for now it is focusing its energy on motorised pulleys.

The company says that its client base is in no way limited to any particular group or industry. This ranges from small individual operators to business units owned by large mining and industrial groups.

“We have supplied engineering project house TWP with a 500H-RL 1200 motorised pulley for use at the Black Rock manganese mine, which is operated at 18,5 kW,” he says.

Further, Melco has supplied materials handling company Roymec with a 630H-RL 1700 motorised pulley with a power rate of 37 kW for coal mining giant Anglo Coal. If the motorised pulley had not been installed, the conveyor gantry would have to be considerably upgraded to be able to carry external drive components cantilevered on the side. Thus, for this project, the motorised pulley demonstrates the advantage of the entire drive being concentrically loaded on the conveyor gantry, says Steinmann.

“At diamond company Debswana’s Jwaneng mine, the 630H-RL 1800 with a 30-kW motorised pulley operates comfortably in temperatures in excess of 45 °C,” he notes.

Meanwhile, at the Optimum colliery, a 630H-RL 1700 motorised pulley of 55 kW was installed, while platinum miner Anglo Platinum acquired an 800H-RL 1200 motorised pulley with a 75-kW power rate, says Steinmann.

A significant challenge has been to sell the concept of the motorised pulley to the client. This is a result of challenging conventional equipment with a technologically advanced machine that has all its components in a compactable drum. “Many engineers, who tend to be conservative at the best of times, struggled to accept the concept of the motorised pulley,” he concludes.
