Monitoring of belt conveyor components

Hello,

I'm working on a project which consist in increasing the reliability of the belt conveying system and decrease the shutdown time for repairs. In order to do that, we want to implement an intelligent monitoring system (like SCADA) on most components of the conveyor (motor, gearbox, pulley bearings, belt and even scrappers and idlers if the technology is available) . We are conveying iron ore with some slabs up to 9''x18''x36'' at around 7,500 mtph.

So this is my question for you: Do you know a place anywhere in this world with similar activity that have successfully implemented a monitoring system on their conveyors? It could be any ore mine/facility (iron, gold, copper, etc.) or coal mine that handle big particles and is up to date in monitoring technology that prevents unexpected maintenance shutdowns. We need to visit a place like that before to take any decision. I greatly appreciate any input from you at this matter.

..What can happen will happen.

I am amazed to find that most state of the art monitoring does not already exist on a plant of the size mentioned. Iron ore conveying reliability has been discussed at great length on these forums and most component manufacturers detail maintenance procedures. Such procedures should/must have been read by your own engineering departments before the EPC was started. The only issue will be the degree of adherence to those procedures during operation.

You slabs are quite large and troublesome. Without knowing your conveyor design it is unrealistic for forum members to offer meaningful comment. At a guess your slabs are becoming problematic and your feed method is rather crude and large scale. There is no cheap remedy for that situation which is rooted in faulty specification and/or inadequate maintenance. You will have to grin and bear the cost of a larger spares holding and more maintenance facilities.

Thank you John for your answer. The main scope of my post was to find about a place when a conveyors monitoring system is well implemented and is working.
