Pick-up Velocity for Modified Starch

Posted in: , on 23. Mar. 2015 - 06:11

dear all,

i am assisting in designing a conveying system for modified starch transfer.

The distance is about 100 m horizontal and 20 m vertical, 6 bends

if i am going by dilute positive, what is the pick up velocity i should be using.

thank you

Dear ellson.isaac,

Designing a pneumatic conveying system requires much more knowledge than knowing the pick-up velocity.

The required pick-up velocity depends on:

-suspension velocity of the particles

-vacuum system or pressure system

-in case of a pressure system, the pick-up velocity is a function of the conveying pressure.

The information, given in the thread, is far from complete.

Although the distance and number of bends are given, the conveying rate is missing.

Choosing the conveying regime (dilute or dense) is done by calculation, whereby the operating point of the installation is designed at the lowest acceptable velocity.

This will be also the lowest energy consumption per conveyed ton.

Another decision you have to make is the choice of the compressor type (low- or high pressure ratio system), which has influence on the pipe diameter and the filters. (and the pressure of course)

Whether this operating point is dense or dilute is then not important anymore.

(What is your definition of dilute and dense?)

For starch, you need to be aware of the explosion risk and might opt for nitrogen as carrying medium, which choice also influences the pick-up velocity.

Consult a well-known and experienced supplier of these type of pneumatic conveying installations.

Have a nice day

Teus

Hi

I have some experience for starch conveying, yes, it is easy to convey the starch using dilute phase pneumatic conveying, for different starch , 11-13m/s is ok for pick up velocity. only be careful about the filter.

Best Regards
