Flameless explosion pressure relief

The REMBE® Q-Box II – indoor explosion pressure relief with flame trap

The free explosion pressure relief is often a practical solution for facilities in the open air. However, greater safety distances, and possibly other installations such as blow-off channels, are necessary in order to protect people and machines.

The REMBE® Q-Box II is the answer: the company’s internal development facilitates pressure relief in the smallest space, indoors and outdoors. The Q-Box II with integrated bursting disc reduces the effects of the dust explosion to a level, which can be disregarded. This enables a multi-layer flame absorber with dust-reducing effect. Whether it’s a chip-container, silo, elevator or similar – the Q-Box II can be used in a wide variety of applications across all sectors. Retrofitting is also possible in existing facilities at any time. In comparison to other relief systems such as blow-off channels the Q-Box II is significantly more economic. This includes gaining operational floor space.

Q-Box II – maintenance-free, unlimited service life

Like the REMBE® bursting discs, the Q-Box II is maintenance-free, and service life is unlimited. Operating costs are therefore zero. For these reasons, demand from plant manufacturers and operators is continuous. ATEX-tested, made from top-quality materials and "Made in Germany" the Q-Box II is impressive.

The Sanitary Cover offers additional protection against pollution, for applications in sterile and hygienic areas.

The REMBE Q-Rohr®-3-6T - Innovative explosion protection for metal processing companies

Fire and explosion properties of metal dusts: protection measures and the characteristics of application

Metal dusts, which occur in industry, carry in themselves a high risk potential with regard to flammability and explosion properties. Depending on the procedure this can on the one hand, be splinters from a turning shop in the case of shape cutting chipping technology of aluminium components, or welding fume from laser or plasma welding processes with particles well below 1 µm diameter. Both materials can trigger critical situations.

Traditional specifications such as the maximum time-based increase in pressure and the maximum explosion pressure do not, in the case of metal dusts, always reveal anything about the effects of an explosion. In fact, combustion temperatures and calorific combustion energies must also be taken into consideration. Light metals can assume very varying high technical explosion characteristics, depending on the particle size and degree of oxidation.

These physical principles also apply to suppression systems. The DIN EN 14373 standard is currently being revised, in order to offer better protection with regard to this scenario. Until now, almost all suppression systems have been unsuitable for metal dust explosions.

Based on these findings, the standards for testing protection systems were matched with the special characteristics of metal dusts. In particular, in the case of flameless pressure relief equipment, the test standard DIN EN 16009 prescribes tests with existing dusts under real, practical conditions of use.

REMBE Q-Rohr®-3-6T: Flameless explosion pressure relief for metal dusts – a global innovation from REMBE®

As inventor of the flameless explosion pressure relief REMBE® engineers have gone on to develop the Q-Rohr®-3 in accordance with the new requirements described, so that the specifications of DIN EN 16009 are complied with in different test scenarios. The scope of application of the well-known and proven Q-Rohr®-3 was thereby expanded to include metal dusts. REMBE® is globally the only manufacturer that offers a protection system for metal dust explosions.

The Q-Rohr®-3 is used, in particular, for the flameless pressure relief of machines in interior spaces at risk of dust explosions. In this protection system, the need for cost-intensive blow-off channels for conduction of the explosions outward is negated. Due to the patented system of flame entrapment and dust retention, the Q-Rohr®-3 enables a process-optimised setup of all the equipment in the immediate vicinity of people and machines. There are no maintenance costs and these are replaced by a simple, visual inspection.

The Q-Flap Compact II - Explosion Isolation in Aspiration Lines

With the non-return explosion valve series Q-FlapCompact II explosion in nearly all industrial sectors can effectively be isolated. The Q-FlapCompact II is certified as a protective system acc. to EU guideline 94/9/EG (ATEX 114) and approved for decoupling explosions of organic and inorganic dusts.

During operation the downstream mounted flap is kept open through the process air flow. In case of breakdown the flap is closed due its own weight. Starting the system, the opening of the flap is damped.

In case of an explosion the Q-FlapCompact II closes due to the pressure front spreading within the ductwork. The following explosion flame and the pressure cannot strike back the ductwork. Personnel working at capturing points or downstream system parts are protected against the explosion effects. The flap damping element prevents the flap to open shortly after an explosion due the appearing low pressure. The passive non-return Q-FlapCompact II protects horizontal aspiration lines with a flow velocity between 15-30 m/s. Extensive research and testing under real explosion conditions enabled approval of the Q-FlapCompact for St 1 or St 2 (max KST-Value = 300 bar x m/s). Q-FlapCompact is applicable for reduced pressure (Pred) up to 0.5 bar (7.25 psi)

Option: Monitoring with Q-FlapCompact II Plus

Additionally the Q-FlapCompact II Plus offers a wear-and-tear sensor that monitors the abrasion that could possibly occur on the stainless steel flap. It is also equipped with an integrated clogging sensor that indicates any kind of product accumulation underneath the seats which ensures safe closing of the flapplosions of organic and inorganic dusts

The Rembe C-LEVER® - Highly Precise thanks to friction-free measurement

Besides high accuracy, flexibility, simple integration and handling, this dynamic measuring system offers high process safety.

This is guaranteed by a patent-pending, friction-free measurement of the centripetal force. The C-LEVER® direct gravimetrically measures the product stream at the sensor without any mechanical components such as rotary belts, bearing or other moving parts. This offers a step-change in measuring accuracy of ± 0.2 % and a turn-down ratio of 20: Product characteristic changes have negligible adverse on the repeatable accuracy.

The steeply mounted gravimetric slide sensors prevent the product’s adhesion, which eliminates the zeropoint shift as a source of error. Costly pneumatic cleaning becomes history. The compact size means it is easier to install. Lower costs, fewer spares, less downtime.

The Rembe ElevatorEX® II - Protection against explosions in elevators and drag conveyors

An explosion in an elevator can have devastating consequences and can greatly endanger the lives of employees as well as the continuity of the business. In next to no time, unprotected explosions spread throughout the whole elevator, causing long-lasting damage. The consequence is long production standstills and extra costs. Time-consuming repairs or deliveries of replacements can take several months. These unplanned downtimes can cause failures or delays in deliveries. Clients look for alternative sources of supply and the company loses market shares.

There are particular risks from elevators installed inside buildings. If there is an explosion, there is a risk of the blast wave causing the elevator shafts to rip open. The resulting flames can spread unhindered to the individual floors and cause secondary explosions.

Despite all previous protection and precautionary measures, time and again there have been large elevator explosions, which cost human lives and have destroyed whole buildings, including the foundation walls.

ElevatorEX® II – REMBE® builds on the concept instead of individual solutions

The REMBE® system solution consists of three synchronised components: maintenance-free relief devices such as Q-Box II or bursting discs are installed on critical parts of the machinery, such as the elevator’s foot and head. Infrared detectors identify flame fronts, which the extinguishing barriers of the Q-Bic can put out within milliseconds. This prevents the flames in the elevator shafts, feed openings and discharge shafts from spreading. If using a Q-Box II these can also be installed outside, close to walking and transport routes in the immediate vicinity of the elevator. If the Q-Box II is used in the internal area, plant and machines can be installed in a space-saving manner. The safety area required for blow-off channels is negated as the Q-Box II eliminates both flames and the heat of the explosion.

The ElevatorEX® II is globally the only protection system for elevators with EC-type examination. Existing machinery can easily be retrofitted. As explosion effects are reduced to < 0.4 bar, even older elevators can withstand these pressures.

With regard to current and future safety requirements this safety concept offers an effective and cost-saving solution for many different sectors and uses. In the long-term both costs and expenditure are reduced and a maximum in safety can be achieved. Although explosions cannot be completely prevented, their consequences can be limited to a minimum. As a result of this, the plant can quickly be put into operation again, loss of production and delays in delivery are reduced.

The Rembe EX-GO-VENT-HYP - Sanitary explosion protection in spray-drying plants

Spray-drying plants are an ideal application for the protective measure of "explosion venting" and they are primarily used in the chemical and food industry, e.g. to produce milk powder or soluble coffee powder. The food is finely pulverized in a drying tower using jets or rotating discs. The powder-like product is then using hot gas.

Since every protection system is connected to the container to be protected, the risk of undesired product contamination is a concern due to the accumulation of possible sediments. This risk should always be taken into consideration particularly when engineering plants processing food or pharmaceuticals.

To address this requirement, the flat bursting disc EX-GO-VENT-HYP has been especially developed for hygienically demanding applications found in the industries of food processing and pharmaceuticals. The smooth surfaces, in connection with the patented, full surface and tapered sealing concept, enable the implementation of these special bursting discs in previously critical plants such as spray-dryers with/without wet cleaning, fluidized bed dryers, filters and mixers. To ensure a wide-spread acceptance of the application in operational practice, the design of the EX-GO-VENT-HYP is based on the strict criteria of EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group).
