Filling Factor and Edge Distance

Its a very basic question but somehow I am looking for experts opinion on this.

What is optimum filing factor to be considered while sizing a trough belt conveyor?

I normally consider 80% on rated capacity or 95 % on design capacity(=1.2xrated capacity)

Now I have a situation where I am asked to go for 100% filling on rated capacity to reduce the belt width and so the cost.

Also what should be the optimum edge distance . The material is potash powder with BD of 1 t/m3.Surcharge Angle 15 degrees, Idlers 45 degree

Let me know if more information is required.

72 in. Belt 5000 tph 3.6 m/sec 100% 130mm edge

84 in. Belt 5000 tph 3.2 m/sec 81% 228 mm edge

What is the forum's opinion on this?

Thanks

Far from an expert, though:

The answer depends on the question - what is the criteria (CAPEX, OPEX and safety issues associated with spillage etc)? How is the conveyor loaded (does it surge)?

If you can accept increased spillage and less flexibility to unknowns (vagaries in actual cf design density, surcharge angle etc) and probably increased OPEX then maybe you can accept the lower CAPEX option.

We do not have sufficient information to make this judgement.

Lyle
