Sharing technical skills and expertise for industry in India

India is one of the fastest growing markets for the engineering and manufacturing sectors, and with that growth comes a demand for technical expertise and the opportunity for making introductions and the right connections with businesses based there. To address this, the Institution is organizing two events in India in November: one for the automotive industry and the other for the process industry, and a few places are still available for delegates.

On 8-9 November the Institution is running ‘Innovations in fuel economy and sustainable road transport’ in Pune: its first technical two-day conference in India. It will be followed just a few weeks later on 22-23 November by the two-day technical seminar, ‘Bulk solids handling: technology and development for the 21st century’ at Larsen & Toubro in Chennai.

Bulk solids handling: technology and development for the 21st century

For engineering professionals who need to implement leading-edge technology used to handle bulk materials such as mined ores, stone and coal, this two day seminar will offer comprehensive insights into industry best practice and regulatory requirements to stay ahead in this competitive market.

Day one will present rail unloading, storage and reclaim as well as ship loading and unloading. Day two will present belt conveying, plant layout, control and operation.

Attending will help plant managers and operators; design engineers, mining and process feasibility specialists and consultants; procurement specialists, plus infrastructure and logistics specialists evaluate the latest design methods and technologies; understand how reliability reduces equipment complexity and maintenance requirements; and examine how system layout can improve constructability.

Taz Khatun, the Institution's executive for the conference said: “Bulk solids handling is booming in India. There is a real hunger for sharing best practice and industry-leading knowledge, plus a lot of companies are interested in doing business in India, so this two-day seminar is well-timed to meet a market need.”

“The event is hosted by Larsen & Toubro – a very well respected company in India – and is going to be attended by engineering professionals from around the globe.”

“We are offering competitive, value for money sponsorship packages to meet the business needs of our delegates and their companies; for instance, a platinum sponsorship package entitles sponsors to six complimentary places at the seminar for their employees, associates or suppliers. The cost of attending the seminar has been designed to be highly cost effective for businesses, offering a good return on investment: fees are low, there is a discount for attending both days, and there is a reduced attendance fee if you are an Indian national.”

“The insight from our members working in India is that this event is of real interest to engineering professionals working in big multi-national companies with UK and India offices. If our members or their colleagues have a branch of their company in India, or if they have clients or suppliers there, they will be interested in attending this event: if they are already going to be in India for business at this time, they can come for one or both days of the seminar.”

“The seminar is going to focus on techniques which can reduce production time, save money, do things more efficiently and effectively – insights that will be extremely useful and beneficial for manufacturers. The bottom line is that if you want to be ahead of the competition and be up to date with best practice and the latest innovations, you need to be ahead of the game: if not, you may be out of business.”

The international event will have speakers from South Africa, Europe, USA and delegates will be able to find out about the latest technology developments, industrial best practice as well as the most up to date regulatory requirements.

Graham Leason, Chair of the Institution’s Bulk Materials Handling Committee, said: “We are looking forward to our first bulk materials handling event in India where we expect the programme we have organised to be interesting and rewarding to all who attend.”

The programme includes a plenary presentation by Professor Mike Bradley of the Wolfson Centre, London on characterisation of bulk solids and there will be discussion covering the many aspects of rail and ship loading and unloading; belt conveying, plant layout, control and operation. There will be an exhibition and delegates will be able to visit the Holck Larsen Museum on site and attend an evening banquet.

Re: Bulk Solids Handling India

We appreciate the topics selected by Host specially-- rail unloading, storage and reclaim as well as ship loading and unloading. For the last 2-3 years there has been good development in India's port sector where we have been able to achieve 80-90000 tpd unloading capacity for bulk material like coal .We expat further improvement in various ports capacities. One of the major bottlenecks is Railway where rakes are not available

(due to not meeting the demand of railway to return the rake with in 4-5 hours) and also lack of loading and unloading facilities to load a rake at port or at mine's ends.Very soon we are going to see wagon tipplers where 4-6 wagons can be unloading at a time and Rapid loading system having capacity of 3-4000 tph

Besides loading/unloading of bulk material other Industries like cement and fertilizer (where the material is packed in the bags) are facing tough time due the following reasons-

-

1. Availability of manpower--Due to NAREGA Scheme laborers are not willing to do hard work. (For loading a rake in 8-9 hours manually we have seen 300-350 laborers working at various sites specially at Fertliser)

2. Availability of Rakes by Indian Railway .

Recently,we have done the detailed study for wagon loading system for Cement and Fertilizer Industries where we have been able to reduce down manpower by 80%.

Last year we have presented our papers specially on wagon loading system (during a seminar in Mumbai) for various materials included bagged product. We would like to share the same with Hon. members of this forum.
