It is used where you want the return belt comes from higher than the natural line off the tail pulley and a conventional idler is too small in diameter to prevent overstressing the belt. This is mainly where space is at a premium.

One downside is that it becomes a potential point where debris missed by a V-plough can end up being trapped between the belt and pulley.

Maybe:

Increase wrap for braked pulley

Reduce belt separation to fit in gallery etc

I agree with Colin,

Well I can also think of the case whereby the conveyor is tail driven, the installation of a snub pulley would help to eliminate slippage and improve traction by increasing the angle of wrap.

Hi..

The basic rule is to never snub the return belt before the tail pulley.

If the tail pulley is large and snubbed, then the gap between tail pulley and the ground is small and difficult to clean.

If you need wrap on the tail pulley for any reason.. e.g. tail drive, then put the snub pulley on top on the carry strand. This means the snub is LT and not the undesirable HT.

Also, any dislodged fines squeezed off from the snub against the dirty side of the belt will be on the carry side, and not cause a heap to build up under the return station.

(Avoiding spillage is of paramount importance)

I give my little strength to Grahams note. He beat me to it. This is how it should be done.

On second reading of GS, he must admit when a brake is applied to the tail, the LT will be HT.

Placing a snub near a drive brake always is a liability if the belt has contaminates that plate on the snub. If this is true, the snub distance should not be agressive. Do not allow the potential buildup to overstress the belt. Place the snub with adequate distance to maintain a safe stress just as you need to do for the head station and its snubs.

Ah yes Larry.. but..

On third reading of GS (Genius Spriggs?) you will realise that on braking, LT changes to HT for a very short time.

When tail driving on the other hand, the LT stays LT for l--o--n--g t--i--m--e.

Good w/e to you
