Since the early 1980s, FLSmidth has been providing Vietnam’s cement producers with the latest technology and equipment to fuel the country’s building boom. And Vietnam’s building sector shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, the country’s cement demands are expected to reach 80 million tonnes by 2015 and over 100 million tonnes by 2020. To meet these needs, FLSmidth recently completed a third line at the Hoang Thach plant and a greenfield plant for Halong Cement (JSC) in HaLong Bay.
Vietnam is one of the world’s fastest growing emerging economies. Propelled by rapid development since the end of the Vietnam War, the country’s cement producers are increasingly focused on the latest technology and equipment. Not only has this led to improvements in existing plants, but also to new plants and production lines that take advantage of technologies such as state of the art pyro process systems for combustion of anthracite.
A third production line for Hoang Thach
Commissioned in 1984, Hoang Thach was FLSmidth’s first cement plant in Vietnam. This production line had a capacity of 3,100 tpd, and its cement quickly became known as a high quality product. In 1993, FLSmidth began work on the plant’s second line, which was ready to produce clinker in early 1996.
Demand has yet to subside, so Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM) contracted FLSmidth in 2006 to supply a third line at Hoang Thach with a capacity of 3,300 tpd.
The plant now has a great deal of flexibility as raw materials can be fed to the crushers and subsequently transported to the storage units in all three lines. In addition to its advanced automation equipment, the third line also features an EV crusher for limestone, a Cross Bar cooler, an Atox Mill for coal grinding, a Duoflex burner and an SLC-D preheater and calciner system for the efficient combustion of anthracite.
“Anthracite is a coal type that contains only small quantities of volatiles which implies that the anthracite is difficult to ignite and to burn. However, the FLSmidth calciner and the Duoflex burners are particularly designed to combust this type of coal efficiently, and at the same time obtain a high calcination degree of 92-95 percent of the raw materials entering the kiln”, says FLSmidth Sales Manager Rune Hurttia.
With its state-of-the-art equipment, Hoang Thach complies with the prevailing emissions standards. The third line began producing clinker in December 2009, and FLSmidth remained on site to train plant supervisors. This exceptional relationship has developed over 30 years and the cooperation has ensured that Hoang Thach continues to be an industry benchmark in the region.
Ha Long Cement’s greenfield plant and new grinding facility
The northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh is now home to the HaLong Cement Joint Stock Company’s new 5,500 tpd greenfield cement plant. Located on the shores of picturesque HaLong Bay, 150 km east of Hanoi, this complete plant from FLSmidth came online in early 2010. The largest plant supplied by FLSmidth in Vietnam to date, HaLong Bay is located close to limestone deposits and has easy access to shipping, so it’s well-suited for exports – especially to the company’s new grinding plant in southern Vietnam also built by FLSmidth.
In addition to the new grinding plant, FLSmidth also built the packing plant near Ho Chi Minh City for HaLong Cement. This facility came on line in early 2009 and includes everything from finish grinding and materials handling equipment to packaging and ship loading facilities. In both the plant and the mill projects, FLSmidth supervised the erection, commissioning, spare parts, civil engineering and staff training.
HaLong cement plant can now ship part of the produced clinker to the cement grinding plant in the south from its terminal and jetty in HaLong Bay. The remaining clinker is used in cement production at the main cement plant and is then sold locally. “This gives the company flexible distribution to the north and the south,” says Rune. “The company can also get some of the additional raw materials in the south, so they don’t need to ship 100 percent of the product. And they can even purchase clinker from elsewhere and then grind it in the south if necessary.”
The complete FLSmidth plant includes a vertical Atox coal grinding mill, an FRM vertical raw mill, a Duoflex burner, an SF Cross-Bar Cooler and an advanced calciner system for the optimal combustion of anthracite coal. After commissioning, all the plant’s guarantee tests were fulfilled and its kiln production was above the guaranteed targets during the performance tests.
