Drive Pulley Slip

Dear all,

I have a situacion with a conveyor belt:

When it rains the drive pulley slips on the conveyor belt and then system stops, but when the weather is dry, the slip does not happen, and the conveyor belt works fine.

This conveyor belt is inclined aprox. 20°

Take-up system: counterweight.

Drive pulley lagging: Yes (Rubber: double chevron)

Probably, that can be causing this situation ?

I propose to check the following items:

1.Lagging of the drive pulley must be grooved properly.

2.Install correct and proper cleaning device.

3.Adjust counterweight; it is better to calculate required weight again, if weight is correct you can increase weight a little for increasing T2 (slack side).

4.You can increase the wrap angle with snub pulley.

5.Don’t forget it is better to keep the drive side of the conveyor dry for example with a shelter.

Any conveyor design text warns you about the interface coefficient of friciton between belt and pulley lagging, and the friction difference between wet and dry conditions.

In addition, other contributing factors are: a) the type of lagging and its condition also need to be evaluated, b) the type of take-up action - gravity, regulated by a control scheme, or fixed; c) if gravity, the sheave and cabling arrangement need to be evaluated; d) poor pulley wrap angle.

The fix may be simple:

a) Increase the take-up force.

b) Improve or correct the lagging

c) Increase pulley wrap angle with snub pulley and alternative arrangement

d) speed up belt to decrease tension

However, you must also evaluate the pulley and structural loads as well as other design efficacies.

This is friction drive so -

T1/T2 = e^µ*

where

T1 is belt tension onto the drive pulley

T2 is belt tension off the drive pulley

µ is the coefficient of friction between the belt and drive pulley

is the angle of wrap of the belt around the drive pulley

e is e (2.71828.......)

If T1/T2 > e^µ* then belt slip occurs so change the variables so T1/T2 < e^µ*

Drive pulley ceramic lagging would give you greatest bang-for-buck after increasing counterweight mass (if possible).
