TAIM WESER CONCLUDES PRE-COMMISSIONING TESTING OF MACHINERY SUPPLIED TO THE VACARISSES (BARCELONA) WASTE TREATMENT PLANT
TAIM WESER has successfully concluded pre-commissioning tests on its installation for the new Valls Occidental waste treatment plant in Vacarisses (Barcelona). The company’s installation consists of a complete composting plant for the organic fraction of urban waste.
Having completed the installation of TAIM WESER’s equipment at the new Valls Occidental waste treatment plant (Valls Occidental WTP) in Vacarisses (Barcelona), pre-commissioning testing of all the new equipment, as well as of the plant control and automation systems, took place during June and July. TAIM WESER’s involvement in this project comprises the engineering and supply of two automatic loading systems, two automatic stack turner machines, a discharge system, an aeration system, as well as assembly and start-up of the installation. Having successfully completed the first stage of pre-commissioning testing, further testing under load conditions will probably take place after the summer.
The TAIM WESER installation consists of an organic waste composting plant, for the organic fraction of urban solid waste, which stabilises this fraction using trapezoidal stacks in enclosed fermentation chambers. Stabilisation is carried out in two halls, each with an exhaust draft aeration system, a feed system and a stack turner, the end product of which is suitable for landscaping or gardening. The stack turning stabilisation system is fully automated and operates within the closed hall without any human intervention. This stabilisation plant is scheduled for start-up by the end of 2010. It will have an organic waste treatment capacity of 154,000 t/a, to be produced by the mechanical treatment section of the Centre.

The Valls Occidental WTP covers 43,900 m2, with a gross floor area of 37,128 m2 and a municipal waste treatment capacity of 254,000 t/a, and 40,000 t/a of organic fraction from selective treatment.
The Centre is composed of two plants, one for composting the organic fraction of urban solid waste, which houses the equipment supplied by TAIM WESER, and one for treatment of the organic fraction of pruning waste, which is sent directly to the plant. The Valls Occidental WTP uses state-of-the-art technology and also stands out for the futuristic architectural design of the facility, which blends perfectly into its surroundings thanks to the use of plants on the actual building structures. The launch of the new centre will allow the gradual but full decommissioning of the Coll Cards landfill, which, after 30 years storing waste from the Valls Occidental, is now close to its storage capacity limit.
