Hot Vulcanization

Posted in: , on 27. Aug. 2010 - 13:12

Dear Friends,

Steel cord 1600mm width ST800 belt 123.8 mtrs length was changed on 07/07/2010 and on 15/08/2010 the joint got damaged due to mechanical problem. And i dicided to open the joint (with out damaging the steel cord) to re do(Hot vulcanization) the joint by new top and bottom pads(Nilos).and the belt was started and running ok.

My question is once cooked joint can we cook again ! and how many times,! and what will be the life the joint!

Regards,

M.Ayappan

Recooking Steel Cord Belt Core Rubber - Life Reduction

Erstellt am 28. Aug. 2010 - 02:34

Reworking and recooking the belt splice core rubber can be done. You must be aware that the specific manufacturer has conducted the critical recure test to calibrate the tensile-shear-endurance life.

Typically, with a good modern core rubber, you can recure once with better than 90% of initial endurance. After two cures of the same rubber, you will loose about 20%. No third cure.

However, when you strip back the core rubber you also may damage the zinc coating on the wire rope. This must be repaired by coating the cord with a primer such as REMA 2000. This goes for the second repair as well.

Regarding splice life: This depends on how the conveyor is run and the ratio of initial belt rating to operating strength. With the typical belt SF=6.7:1, good chute loading, normal speed and loop cycling ( repeated loading upon the splice), acceptable lump size, acceleration control, proper pulley sizing, shape, with a properly arranged belt path, you should have no problem in achieving the mfgr's rated life. The 6.7:1 safety factor accounts for many ills.

Thank you for telling us of this unusual occurrance Very interested to read your submission. It is rare that both the top and bottom covers were so damaged to be removed and yet the splice layout of cords was intact(?). Were the covers torn completly off? Were the skives undamaged? Did you perchance take any jpg's

You can cut the old splicing, and then make new splicing.

Peter ( and others)

Was the "filler" rubber replaced or just the covers.?

Dear friends,

the damage was due to an idler fallen in to the belt and the top layer of the splicing got damaged and we have stopped the belt immediately. After removing the top and bottom cover steel cords are found ok. The splicing method is not individual cord splicing.we have done that joint in step splicing.

hence i have replaced only top and bottom cover rubbers only.Ihave cut the step splicing in the same way.

Dear Mr.Peter Zhu.

The conveyor take up is screw take up system only(maximum we can loose the belt in 500 mm only) the splice length is 1200 mm so if i want to eleminate the splice i have to add a bridge length of approx.3 mts to make two joint.

To eliminate the bridge i have taken a risk to re do the joint.

Did you need to strip the splice right back and re-layup the cords?
