Hello there,
please do not go by rule of thumb. This has got to be correct and the only one who ought to know this well is the original equipment manufacturer. Please get the proper manuals if you do not have them any more.
Also, the shaft to shaft gap is just as important as the coupling gap. It gets overlooked often and can be cause of catastrophic failures as well when thermal growth happens to the point where the shafts and / or coupling make contact causing excessive bearing stress and worse.

Gap Between the Hubs
hi friends,
we use lots of gear couplings.......and i often wonder wat should be the gap between the hubs.....how do we rationalize it or do we have any equation or any particular reasoning.............?
