Dear Mr. Alex,

Coal is material of average abrasiveness. In general, very specialized material is not necessary for skirt liners. The widely used material in India has following characteristics :

C : 0.22, Mn : 1.6, P : 0.08 max, S : 0.04, Si : 0.5, Cr. 0.5 to 0.8, Al : 0.4 max, V : 0.15 max

In case your construction does not have welding for the liner, the following material can be also used, which may be economical but equally suitable.

C : 0.4 to 0.5 , Mn : 0.6 to 0.9, P : 0.04, S : 0.04, Si : 0.15 to 0.35

You can use the locally available material similar to above. The better option is to refer the existing coal conveying plants and get the data from there about the suitable material widely available in your country which will be economical and easy to get.

Hi Alex..

Skirts should not need to be lined at all if your loading point is properly designed. Skirts are there normally to contain any lively material which bounces around on top of the mainstream material untill it has settled down.

Coal is not normally abrasive due to its high carbon content, so have mild steel skirts to contain bouncing pieces, and fit them with rubber on the outside to seal against the belt for dust etc.

Never have skirts running against the burden. This will cut grooves in your top cover, and you will end up with 3 belts.
