Hard Overlay Welding for Vertical Roller Mills: Durable Hard-Facing of Grinding Rolls and Grinding Tables



With KALMETALL-W Kalenborn offers a complete spectrum for hard overlay welding. The following services are available for economic operation of vertical roller mills:

-hard overlay welded grinding rolls and grinding tables

-welding consumables in alloys specifically matched for use in roller mills

-mobile welding systems for flexible use at the site

-welding service available at the Kalenborn premises or in the grinding systems on site.

The Kalenborn welding systems comprise the following components: one or several weld girders with 1 weld head each including a water-cooled weld torch. The weld heads are vertically and horizontally adjustable within a specific range. The particular arrangement allows simultaneous working of one or several grinding rolls. The welding current may be up to 800 amps at a 100% duty time. Hard overlay welding is carried out by the flux cored wire process. Welding consumable alloys are matched to the specific application and the material to be ground.

The above features are supplemented by functional control with a separate operating device which allows following the welding process from the specific position wanted. The automated flux cored wire feeding with barrel unreeling device has been specifically designed for use in vertical roller mills. The DC unit is delivered with a separate cooler. The Kalenborn welding systems are specially adapted to the vertical roller mill concerned. For that purpose the Kalenborn specialists collect the required data at the site.

To ensure reliable and quick assembly and dismantling, the Kalenborn welding systems have been split up in defined pre-assembled units. This facilitates mounting the systems in the grinding plants and removing them later. This advantage applies to both the mechanical setup and for the electrical connections.

The grinding rolls and grinding tables to be regenerated revolve under the field mounted welding torches. The weld seams are arranged next to each other after each revolution and this arrangement is continuously adjusted by means of the control unit.

The Kalenborn welding systems are offered in combination with the comprehensive Kalenborn services, enabling high welding quality as well as short handling periods.

Kalenborn completes their program of economic wear protection measures for vertical roller mills with the regeneration of grinding rolls and grinding tables. In addition to the welding systems and welding consumables described earlier, Kalenborn also supplies new grinding rolls and grinding tables made of KALMETALL-C hard casting with or without KALMETALL-W hard-facing to ensure long duty cycles. Hard casting and hard overlay welding are supplied from a single source of responsibility.

These services supplement a comprehensive program of further wear prevention measures in vertical roller mills, such as wear resistant linings made of KALMETALL-C hard casting, KALMETALL-W hard overlay welding and KALMETALL-HB hard steel provided for in the grinding zone of the mill. The separator area of the mill is protected by KALMETALL-W hard overlay welding, KALMETALL-HB hard steel, KALOCER high alumina ceramics or KALCRET hard compound.
