Fraunhofer IVV organizing a technical conference at ICE 2009

During the 6th International Converting Exhibition ICE which will take place on 24-26 November 2009 in Munich, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV will hold a conference entitled “Converting Processes for Tailormade Packaging“. This will be held on 25 November 2009.

Experts from industry and research organizations will give presentations about new developments in machinery and processes, with the focus being on quality assurance for coating and lacquering. Other topics covered will include encapsulation technology for polymer materials and multilayer barrier film design. The conference will be held in English and full details can be found at

Fraunhofer IVV stand at ICE 2009

At Stand 2-M01 in Hall 2, the Fraunhofer IVV will present its range of services for converters, film manufacturers and users, as well as new developments in the Functional Materials business unit. This concerns in particular functional films with effective barriers against oxygen and water vapor, modification of the surface properties, and customization of the mechanical properties.

Ultra barrier films for technical applications

Within the Fraunhofer Alliance for Polymer Surfaces POLO, the Fraunhofer IVV is collaborating with six other Fraunhofer Institutes on the development of ultra barrier films, for example as encapsulation materials for photovoltaic systems and for long-life high-performance insulation materials for house construction (so-called vacuum insulation panels). The barrier films are suitable for demanding technical applications such as encapsulation materials for flexible displays based on liquid crystals (LCDs), inorganic emitters (LEDs) and organic emitters (OLEDs), and for flexible organic solar cells. The Fraunhofer POLO already has very promising R&D results on the development, manufacture and characterization of flexible ultra barrier systems. In roll-to-roll production the flexible materials give a reproducible water vapor permeability of 2 x 10-4 g/m2 d, as measured at 38oC by the calcium mirror test.

The functionalization of membrane cushion films is another example for roll-to-roll processing. Membrane cushion structures are used for unusual architectonic projects. One example is the Allianz Arena, the new football stadium in Munich. The Fraunhofer IVV is also researching how the membrane cushions must be structured in order to be able to precisely adjust the light permeability and so optimize room climate. The functionalized pilot-material for the required ETFE films (ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene) can be manufactured directly on the film plants available at the institute.

Films coated with whey products improve product shelf-life and are eco-friendly

Under the 7th European Framework Programme, work is currently being carried out at the Fraunhofer IVV on the “Wheylayer“ project. The goal is to replace polymer layers in packaging with a new packaging material containing whey protein. The latter provides an excellent barrier against oxygen and moisture, and the antimicrobial compounds which are naturally present in whey prolong the shelf-lives of food products. Initial results will be presented at the Fraunhofer IVV stand.

European Metallizers Association

E.M.A., the European Metallizers Association has been kindly invited by Fraunhofer to join the institute at their stand at the ICE Exhibition 2009. EMA offers its members the opportunity to participate in shaping the growth of their business sector in Europe. With two meetings a year EMA provides access to industry data, a forum for technical discussion, networking opportunities and PR through its website and committees. EMA is pleased to be present at ICE and welcomes all interested parties and potential members to meet and discuss its activities personally.
