Re: Round Or Link Chain For Bucket Elevator

Probably a matter of opinion.

In general round link chains have shorter pitches so will run smoother on the tail and head wheels( or sprockets).

There is also the option of a belt unless temperatures preclude it's sue.

I wonder if anyone has proper comparative data ?

So much depends upon the material, duty cycle, loading bucket numbers, desired

production speed, the biggest factor would be the "desired elevator height for

the intended purpose desired" and whether the chain has a guide tray to keep

the elevator chain in alignment iduring both the hoisting phase and downward

return in any case.

As they say, horses for courses!

It is important to look at each application, both with regards to feasibility as well as live cost.

Generally speaking the live cost of round link chains are much less.

The only limitation with round link chains is the size limitation and thus maximum load capacity. Round link chains are only available up the 42mm. There are link chains available with a larger breaking load, but there are only a few applications where such loads are required.

There are bucket elevators, with round link chain, in operation with up to 70m shaft centres.

The most important factor governing reliabilty for all types of chain is the bucket attachment, traditional D-Links to DIN had been a problem and required regular inspection and retightening. However this has been overcome by HEKO's TS-shackle design.
