Floating Crane “Princesse Abby”

In November 2008 the “Princesse Abby” completed her first transshipment operation at the Muara Pantai in the Sulawesi Sea (East Kalimantan) and has since then continually performed in excess of contractual requirements. Average daily turnovers of 20,000 t coal are being achieved with the best daily performance being 23,880 t. An outstanding performance and throughput for a floating crane operating in open sea conditions.

This positive result has been achieved through a combination of well thought out design, power-ful and reliable equipment fitted on “Princesse Abby”, the crew as well as the technical and operative support provided by Logmarin and Liebherr.

The owner, PT MITRA SWIRE CTM, an Indonesian JV between PT Mitra Bahtera Segarasejati (www.mbss.co.id), which looks after the floating crane operation and commercial) and Swire CTM Bulk Logistics (www.swirectmbl.com) appointed Logmarin Advisors to cover the entire project starting with the design stage of the “Princesse Abby” through to the commissioning and crew training. Logmarin and, its associated marine engineering company Interprogetti, have jointly developed with Liebherr, this innovative Floating Crane facility for multi-purpose handling.

Logmarin Advisors is a joint venture company set up among first class and internationally renowned partners in their related field of expertise, namely Rina Group, Charles Taylor Consulting and Bancherocosta Group. The advisory services aim to achieve optimization and consequent cost savings in the logistic supply chain for industry and energy. This is supported by quality products from the leading crane manufacturer Liebherr, which has more than forty years of experience in its field.

The “Princesse Abby” is built under the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep It Simple and Safe) balancing the operational requirements with outlays and so conveying the best value for money to the end-user.

Movement dumping devices and suitable dynamic factors to bear stress and fatigue connected with the continued heavy duty work in open seas, have been developed and incorporated in the design in order to maximize the equipment availability and to provide more flexibility in the positioning of the barge on either side of the vessel. Therefore, the Logmarin floating crane concept is less sensitive to adverse weather conditions in comparison to standard floating cranes.

The crane itself is a dedicated heavy duty high performance four-rope grab crane type CBG designed and manufactured by Liebherr and has a lifting capacity in grab operation of 35 t at an outreach of 35 m. Designed for continuous operation, these CBG cranes incorporate specific features for open water and heavy duty conditions including:

•specially designed heavy duty hoisting winches

•slew bearings conceived with triple rollers (thus minimizing the risk of breakdown to one of the most critical components of the crane)

•strengthened boom

•the four-rope grab configuration

•heel and trim alarm systems, thus ensuring high turnover

•efficient and effortless loading/unloading from most types of vessels up to Capesize

•Litronic® - LIEBHERR’s own crane control and management system, controls the simul-taneous operation of crane

motions, so ensuring best possible performance and protec-tion for the crane. It also records data about all individual

components in load collectives, all alarm signals and failures as well as peak values. The lifetime of compo-nents can thus be analysed and plans for preventative maintenance and spare parts supply can be established, resulting in an extended lifetime of the crane.

The cargo gathering and crane cycle time is enhanced by using PEINER 24.3 m four-rope scissor grab. Thanks to the large spread of the grab lips (nearly horizontal when open) and the shorter closing stroke the floating cane productivity is maximized.

The double independent electrical generator sets (one set on duty, one stand-by/maintenance, to ensure 24-hour non-stop operation) meet the most demanding emission control regulations and have a highly fuel efficient and economical combustion system.

Last but not least, the overall costs are highly competitive with those for standard floating cranes (capital cost is between 15% and 28% cheaper than that of cranes with comparable perform-ance). Thanks to the standard and proven components duly assembled together with the Liebherr world-wide service network, maintenance costs and spare part availability are opti-mized, thus ensuring highest working reliability.

The basic Floating Crane design can be further tuned to meet specific requirements of the client i.e. can be self-propelled, fit with sheltered area for steel products, containers , heavy lift, inter-mediate storage capacity of up to 3,000 t, RoRo ramp, accommodation, helipad, etc..

Through mastering proven technologies with in-depth and vast knowledge in the field of offshore dry-bulk logistics Logmarin Advisors can provide customised creative and innovative solutions and enable customers to enjoy the advantages of a global view of the supply chain.
