About Hambantota Port

The Sri Lanka government envisages operations in Hambantota port to first start with the storage and sale of bunker fuels, mainly for ships passing the south coast.A $76.5-million bunker terminal will be built with an initial capacity of 500,000 metric tonnes (mt). The terminal -PH-I is expected to be completed in mid-2010.

The first phase of the project includes the bunkering terminal, a 1,000-metre jetty and an oil refinery.

The relatively dry weather in the region is an added advantage as ports are required to operate round-the-clock.

Location of this port is the best keeping in view of its proximity to the shipping lane – being just six nautical miles from the main East-West trade route across the Indian Ocean.

In PH-I there are also going to be 600 m long berth which can handled a cape vessel-1,00,000 dwt and this facilitiy will be used to load/unload various bulk materials like coal/coke,iron ore, clincker, billets,FRM,logs, steel pipe, steel sheets and minerals.
