The Brabender DualTray Feeder, a mass flow metering feeder featuring vertical flow of the metered ingredients and utilising natural bulk ingredient flow and gravity, is supplied as a loss-in-weight feeder mounted in a free-standing mounting base with load cells. If applied as a storage and filling station, e. g. for hopper scales, the Brabender DualTray Feeder is also available as a volumetric unit without load cells.
The operating principle is based on cylindrical feed modules with semicircular guide and feed trays across a part of the modules' cross sections, which are configured one above the other in opposite directions with their discharge edges overlapping. Applying vibration and thus changing the angle of repose induces ingredient flow. Following gravity, the ingredient flows downwards across the trays similar to a cascade, while the flow rate is controlled by variable vibration. Switching vibration off stops ingredient flow instantaneously because the ingredient assumes its angle of repose again. Hence, the feeder is particularly suitable for batching. As it has no rotating parts, it is suitable for damageable ingredients. In addition, its operating principle makes the feeder suitable for bulk ingredients with grains of different sizes, lumpy media and fibres.
The feeder was designed for easy dismantling and quick cleaning. The feed unit can be disconnected from the vibration drive by releasing a fixation handle so that the feed modules and the outlet cone connected by clamping rings can then be removed for cleaning or replacement after relasing the rings.

For the production of plastics premixes Brabender Technologie KG has delivered an automatic gravimetric batching installation to a leading supplier of speciality plastics. The system consists of a travelling hopper scale with interchangeable storage and metering containers, which can be connected to any of a variety of docking points on an upper level for gain-in-weight feeding of the raw materials into the hopper scale according to the respective recipe.
The concept of interchangeable storage and metering containers was put into practice by using Brabender DualTray Feeders. Specially for the project Brabender developed a new "jumbo version" for feed rates up to 5000 dm/hr. DualTray Feeders are vibratory mass flow feeders consisting of free-standing mounting bases accommodating storage hoppers with bottom-mounted metering feeders providing vertical ingredient flow. The operating principle of the metering feeders is based on two or more cylindrical feed modules configured one above the other with built-in semicircular feed trays conveying in opposite directions. Applying vibration induces flow and makes the ingredient flow downwards across the vibrating trays like a cascade, while the flow rate is controlled by variable vibration. Switching the vibration off stops the ingredient flow instantaneously. Hence, these feeders are particularly suitable for batching. In addition, DualTray Feeders are designed for easy dismantling and quick cleaning. For removal, the feed unit can be disconnected from the vibration drive simply by releasing a fixation handle. The individual feed modules are interconnected by clamping rings and can easily be separated.
The decisive reasons for using Brabender DualTray Feeders were their universal applicability for a multitude of raw materials, their extraordinary cleaning features, the combination of storage hopper and metering feeder in one and last but not least their moderate price.
