Benetech speeds up simulation times with investment in EDEM

Lebanon, NH (USA) October 29, 2008 – DEM Solutions, world leader in discrete element modeling (DEM) software and services, announced today that Benetech, Inc. (Montgomery, IL), a leader in advanced chute technology, is implementing a perpetual license for the use of DEM Solutions’ EDEM modeling software. Always looking at ways to enhance their leadership role in bulk material handling, Benetech will be using EDEM in the design, troubleshooting, and optimization of transfer chutes, conveyors, and other coal handling equipment.

Benetech has been in the forefront of DEM simulation for chute design, having for years used DEM modeling in the design of their advanced engineered transfer chutes. As Benetech’s business expanded, it became clear that they required a better DEM software tool - both faster and with features making it more applicable to a wider range of materials and tonnages. They started evaluating EDEM as a possible replacement. In an in-house comparison, Benetech found that EDEM ran identical scenarios in much less time than their existing tool. EDEM also offered more sophisticated modeling, including much higher particle counts, wide distributions in particle size, non-spherical particles, cohesion, and other advanced modeling features important to Benetech.

“We’ve been convinced of the value of DEM simulation for chute design for years but had outgrown our existing DEM software,” said Matt Clarke, Engineering Manager at Benetech. “We benchmarked EDEM ourselves, comparing it apples-to-apples against our existing DEM tool, and discovered it ran 80 times faster on the same hardware. The greater sophistication of the EDEM software will allow us to create far more accurate models, yet complete them in a fraction of the time we used to spend. We believe that EDEM will also allow us to expand our projects and products to handle a wider range of materials and tonnages with greater confidence. My engineers are very happy we are making this change.”

According to Dr. John Favier, CEO of DEM Solutions Ltd, “DEM technology has greatly matured over the last decade and, as a result, we have seen wider use of DEM within the bulk material handling community.” As for Benetech’s conclusion, Dr. Favier added, “We’re proud to agree that EDEM is the fastest DEM software on the market and that our users don’t need to choose between speed, simulation accuracy and ease of use – EDEM provides them all. We’re pleased to see that Benetech’s thorough and careful evaluation process led them to choose EDEM.”

About DEM Solutions

DEM Solutions partners with their customers to improve their products and processes by simulating and analyzing operations at the particle scale. First released in 2005, EDEM software is now used in the design and analysis of particulate handling, processing, and manufacturing operations in almost every industry sector and engineering discipline.

EDEM provides companies with a tool to substantially reduce the number of physical prototypes and tests required to get a product to market or a process on-stream. It is used to help trouble-shoot difficult particulate processes and, because it is physics based, it can greatly improve understanding of system fundamentals leading to better product and process design and innovation.

DEM Solutions’ corporate headquarters are located in Edinburgh, Scotland, with offices in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Frankfurt, Germany and Singapore with Distributor representation worldwide.
