FLSmidth invest in EDEM software

Edinburgh, Scotland, 17th October 2008 - DEM Solutions, world leader in discrete element modeling (DEM) software and services, is pleased to announce that FLSmidth, a global player in cement and minerals technology, has invested in EDEM software to simulate bulk handling and production processes during the design stage of product development and general research.

FLSmidth supplies process design and equipment for all materials handling applications for the cement and minerals industry as well as the pulp & paper, fertilizer and related industries. Since FLSmidth was founded 126 years ago, they have been characterized by innovative thinking and a desire to find the best possible technological solutions. The deployment of EDEM as part of the design process continues to support FLSmidth’s reputation for innovation, and the company aim to offer optimum solutions tailored specifically to customers’ needs. This investment in EDEM will help FLSmidth to shorten development schedules, improve operational efficiency and retain their technological advantage in the market.

Michael Bo Dragsdal Hansen, Simulation Engineer at FLSmidth states, that vital information in the design phase can be extracted early in the process. “Using EDEM, we can gain a lot of information in the design phase, often information we could not previously measure”.

FLSmidth recognizes the benefits of using DEM software and can see how EDEM can be implemented globally to develop and improve products and processes. Mads Jespersen, Head of Product Development states, “Simulation tools strengthen our Research & Development at FLSmidth, and EDEM software completes the full set of CAE tools along with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis).”

About DEM Solutions

DEM Solutions partners with their customers to improve their products and processes by simulating and analyzing operations at the particle scale. First released in 2005, EDEM software is now used in the design and analysis of particulate handling, processing, and manufacturing operations in almost every industry sector and engineering discipline.

EDEM provides companies with a tool to substantially reduce the number of physical prototypes and tests required to get a product to market or a process on-stream. It is used to help trouble-shoot difficult particulate processes and, because it is physics based, it can greatly improve understanding of system fundamentals leading to better product and process design and innovation.

DEM Solutions’ corporate headquarters are located in Edinburgh, Scotland with offices in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Frankfurt, Germany and Singapore with Distributor representation worldwide.

About FLSmidth

FLSmidth & Co. A/S is a global organisation based in Copenhagen, Denmark employing about 9,400 people worldwide. It provides the global cement and mineral industries with plants, machinery, services and know-how.

Serving the cement and mineral industries is the core activity of the group.

FLSmidth’s two main business areas, Cement and Minerals, are organised in project divisions that cover specific geographical regions. The project divisions are supported by global technical divisions and divisions that provide services and spare parts, automation solutions and air pollution control.

FLSmidth’s four regional cement project divisions are based in Denmark (two), USA and India. FLSmidth also operates via a number of specialised product companies and is represented on all continents by sales and service offices.
