Splice two different conveyor belts?

Posted in: , on 13. Oct. 2008 - 05:13

Hi,

On site we are currently using one Brand of conveyor belt. We are currently trying to clean up our stock of old reels of belt - some of which are different brands to what we are using at the moment.

One of these old reels is a 20m piece of belt we were keeping as backup for use as an insert. Could anyone tell me if there are specific issues with splicing two different brands of belting together?

I thought perhaps there might be issues concerning rubber formulation specifics: eg; melting point, bonding characteristics, etc, that might make this a practice to avoid.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks very much,

Chelsea

Best bet is to submit the information of mfgr, age, storage environment, and splice kit to both for their recommendation.

Old belt (age time > 5 years and storage temperature > 20C) will factor into your decision. We can throw up a long list of don'ts. In the end, it boils down to risk vs benefit. Fabric vs steel cord also has an impact.

If the belt is incline or of some reasonable length, I would purchase a new section of belt without question. Core gums; fabric treatment, splice kit properties all play a part in the decision. Seems like if you have time buy new. If in an emergency punt with what you have on hand.

Certainly rubber formulation can play a part if the belt has a special formulation for the intended environment and if: NR, SBR, BR, EDPM, NEOPRENE, et al., core gums, fabric construction, fabric type, steel cord pitch, etc. all have special engineering and handling.

Hello there Chelsea..

For fabric belts, do cold splices using SC2000 and all will normally be well.

For steelcord belts, the bond between the cords is made using the gum you put in during splicing so you will get your strength as long as the materials are nice and fresh, and there is nothing peculiar about the cover rubber as Larry has indicated.

We have spliced all kinds of belts together to get plants running again after belt damage, including new with old and using different belt classes spliced together.

One thing to keep in mind is that the belts you splice together should be pretty much the same thickness.

Please ensure that

-Grades of the belts

-ratings of the belts

- thickness of the belts

are same. Using SC 2000 may not be helpful for the Heat resistant belts. As per my knowledge it is not meant for the materials which are above 80 deg. centigrade. Please ensure with the dealers.

Dear Chelsea,

If you have two various belt quality it's generally difficult or impossible hot splice (or cold splice). The only solution should be a finger splice but with tremondous risks. The only possible recommendation is to use a mechanical belt fastener like the Super-Screw fastener if you want a long duration splice.
