Simultaneous tempering and conveying of powdered materials

BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger can now be integrated into pneumatic conveying

Weingarten, August 2008 – The BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger from Coperion Waeschle GmbH & Co. KG, Weingarten/Germany, is now available for immediate integration into pneumatic conveying systems. The direct installation now considerably improves heat transfer, permitting the combination of the two processes "conveying" and "temperature control" within one single system and thus making the handling of bulk materials even easier than hitherto. Through changes in design, Coperion Waeschle has now extended the scope of application of the hitherto gravimetrically fed BULK-X-CHANGE® far beyond the handling of free-flowing powders and granules. This new integrable version is also suitable, for example, for fine-particle powders that have a fluidizing or cohering tendency during discharge from the silo. Pneumatic conveying systems are frequently used for the handling of such powders.

The basic principle of the new process (patents pending) is the direct installation of the BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger into a pneumatic conveying line. The pneumatically conveyed powder, together with the conveying gas, enters the vertically arranged heat exchanger from below. As a specialist both in pneumatic conveying and in heating and cooling processes, Coperion Waeschle can now offer its customers many important advantages when it comes to the handling of powdered bulk materials. The integrable version of the BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger

•is ideal for the handling of pneumatically conveyable powders, especially those powders that are fluidizable,

•achieves high heat transfer rates at low additional pressure loss,

•is distinguished by its compact design and has no moving parts,

•permits the setting of short, defined residence times,

•has only a negligible hold-up of product and hence permits rapid changeover from one product to another,

•is easy to clean,

•necessitates negligible capital investment by comparison with other systems,

•can be retrofitted into existing systems relatively easily.

The combination of a pneumatic conveying system with the BULK-X-CHANGE® bulk materials heat exchanger for heating or cooling is suitable for numerous kinds of powdered products. Examples of possible applications are

•the cooling of PTA powder ( terephthalic acid powder ),

•the cooling of powders downstream of fluidized bed systems,

•the cooling of powders after spray agglomeration, e.g. in spray towers,

•the cooling or pre-heating of polymer powders,

•the cooling or pre-heating of superabsorbent powders,

•the cooling of alumina powder,

•the cooling of melamine powder,

•the cooling of catalytic powder.

Available for pilot plant trials at Coperion Waeschle is a pneumatic conveying plant that can be equipped with different sizes of heat exchangers and is rated for throughputs of up to 6,000 kg/hour and temperatures of up to 150 °C.

The Coperion Group, together with the companies Coperion Werner & Pfleiderer, Coperion Waeschle, Coperion Keya, Coperion Hartmann and 20 sales and service companies, is an international market and technology leader for compounding systems and bulk-material systems. Coperion designs, supplies and maintains systems, machines and components for the plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, minerals and food industries. In the 2007 financial year, Coperion achieved sales to the tune of 480 million euros, and employs around 2,100 staff as at 31.12.2007.
