Metso Minerals – Aggregate Production on the Move

While the delivered price of most quarried products is, at best, static or, in some markets, falling, energy, maintenance and labour costs continue to rise reducing margins and prompting quarry owners to seek innovative solutions.

In fixed-point aggregate operations, load and haul accounts for a sizeable portion of the operating costs. Dump trucks run empty for half of every round trip and burn ever more dollars as the quarry face recedes. Furthermore, such operations generally require at least two loaders – one at the face and the other on stockpile duties and, probably a third machine on standby. And, the bigger the fleet the bigger the wage bill.

It follows that significant savings can be made by eliminating the dump trucks and taking the processing plant to the quarry face.

Pioneered in the early 1980s tp meet the needs of small quarry owners and highway builders, Metso mobile aggregate production has evolved from a simple crusher on a flat-bed chassis into the highly sophisticated work stations found today in quarries around the world.

Whether the requirement is for rubble, aggregate, sand or fertilizer, Metso’s comprehensive range of Lokotrak track-mounted mobile crushing, screening, stockpiling and dedicated conveying units deliver the tonnes reliably, economically and to the most exacting specifications.

In some instances it requires just one operator to feed and operate plant and, as required, load customers’ tippers with stockpiled product.

Where there is asphalt or concrete production, relays of Lokotrack mobile cushing plants and mobile conveyors carry the aggregate directly from the primary crusher to the batching plant – no dump trucks.

When required, the tracked modules crawl, under their own power, to a new face or to form a new configuration.

Jusy as Metso’s mobiles advance with the quarry face for optimum productivity, so Metso’s Lokotrack technology advances to enable quarry owners to meet the exacting criteria for construction materials efficiently and economically.

The latest thoroughbreds to emerge from Metso’s Finnish stables offer greater output of quality products at less cost.

First out of the gates are two completely new jaw crushers. The Nordberg C96 and the compact C116, the newest in Metso’s range of jaw crushers, with a potential throughput of over 400 tph of rock, basalt or rock-based rubble. Able to accept up to 640mm feed-stock the radically redesigned crushing chamber, which offers better ‘grip’, boasts a 10% efficiency gain.

Mounted on tracked chassis’s, the sure-footed mobile Lokotrack versions of the Nordberg crushers are designated LT106 and LT116 respectively. The ‘S’ of the Lokotrack LT106S and LT116S indicates that these models are provided with easily-demountable flat-bed screening modules. The first, with a 3000x1100 screening surface, can produce two grades of aggregate (20-80mm) in a single pass The LT116S module has a larger, 3000x1300, screen making this Locotrack an ideal stand-alone unit or a key element in a combination of Lokotrack secondary and tertiary crusher units and mobile screening stations.

LT116S options include a longer, hydraulically folding discharge conveyor, radio remote controls and a magnetic separator.

The 3000x1300 screen module is compatible with the LT1213 and LT200HP Lokotracks.

With high output of a consistently well-shaped product from it’s fine-tuning Nordberg HP200 cone crusher, efficient secondary and fine crushing, is what the brand new Lokotrack LT200HPS mobile crushing plant was built for. It’s 3.9 m” single-deck detachable screen features 20 to 60 mm mesh options while the double-deck version produces two accurately-sized products simultaneous. Optional recirculating conveyors offer efficient closed circuit operation.

Marry two well-proven concepts – the Barmac B-Series vertical shaft impactor and Metso’s Lokotrack - and you have the VSI-Lokotrack – the first Metso mobile to be centred around this popular and highly-effective rock-on rock crusher which can produce aggregate with excellent and consistent cube characteristics.

Completing the team are two new mobile screeinig and stockpiling stations. The heavy-duty, versatile, high-performance Lokotrack ST272 with a wide range of screeing options can accept 600 mm feed and deliver three end products in a wide range of sizes

The heart of Metso’s Lokotrack ST620F is the time-proven, widely-used Nordberg FS303M flat screen. The unit’s large screening area combines high capacity with efficient fine screening, without compromising mobility. The standard unit accepts feed material of up to 200 mm and is capable of producing four different fractions.

In both units, the output conveyors are hydraulically folded and remain on board for speedy transport.

CAT Tier 3 low-emission, energy-efficient power packs are standard on all Lokotracks.

Wherever possible, hydraulic openings are provided for quick and easy servicing.

A standard feature with all Lokotracks is Metso’s user-friendly IC500 process automation system which not only features single-button start up and automatic crushing process control but includes advanced fault diagnostics. Optional remote control enables safe and easy in-sire relocation.

These are challenging times.

With fuel costs rising daily, severe tyre shortages affecting machine availability and the demand for skilled personnel forcing up salary bills, more and more quarry operators are seeing Locotrack mobile crushing and screening as the only reliable option - especially when the figures show a 60% gain on load and haul and an overall saving of, at least, 30% on fixed point processing

Visitors to Conexpo in March will have the rare opportunity to see all the latest Lokotracks in one place and explore the the advantages with the Metso team. Alternatively, you can phone Finland or check the web-site for your nearest contact.
