Eriez Showcasing New Separators at IFAT

Optimum separation is a key stage in all recycling applications. Eriez has designed and developed an extensive range of separators utilising magnetic principles, and at the IFAT exhibition in Munich, Germany in May, the company will be showcasing two of their newest systems for non ferrous and ferrous metal recovery.

The all new RevX Eddy Current Separator is the result of a specific design programme aimed at improving the level of separation and increasing metal recovery.

Like all Eddy Current Separators, the new RevX Separator has a strong magnetic rotor that revolves at high speeds inside a non-magnetic shell. A conveyor belt transports material into the revolving field, where eddy currents are generated in the non-ferrous metals causing the particle to repel away from the rotating magnetic field.

The magnetic rotors of the RevX, designed using finite element analysis, are intended to suit materials with specific particle size ranges. The RevX Model NM-L is for larger particles, over 25mm in size; whereas the NM-S enables superior separation of problematic smaller particles. These options provide recyclers with equipment to meet their particular separation needs.

The RevX Separator joins the highly successful LC Model in the Eriez range of Eddy Current Separators and can be incorporated in a package of equipment to separate both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

Eriez also introduces to IFAT the innovative non-ferrous metal reclamation system that will enable scrap metal recyclers to reduce handling costs and increase revenue by reclaiming valuable materials currently unrecoverable with traditional sorting equipment.

The Eriez ProSort Metal Sorter uses a traditional conveyor belt to transport the mix of scrap and non-metallics over sensors that detect the metals. These sensors then trigger a reject mechanism, which is unique to the Eriez ProSort. Instead of a costly air reject system, the ProSort uses electromechanical paddles to reject material. The benefits are significant.

Recycling facilities that use metal sorting machines typically install them downstream of Eddy Current Separators to capture valuable metals that might otherwise end up in a landfill. Shredded automobiles, white goods and other scrap move over a vibratory feeder onto a conveyor belt travelling at approximately 150 metres per minute. Sensors under the belt then detect pieces of metal travelling above and trigger the reject mechanism to propel the metal over a splitter while the rest of the material falls off the end of the belt.

The new Eriez ProSort Metal Sorter employs a series of 50mm wide “electromagnetic motorised paddles” to reject metals instead of traditional air nozzles. These paddles are positioned side-by-side in a bank as wide as the belt, so when the sensors detect a piece of metal on the belt, the control circuit energizes the appropriate paddle at the moment the metal passes above, causing it to be diverted from the product stream.

For optimum separation of larger ferrous metals, Eriez also offers Suspended Magnets (Overband CP Magnet on display at show), Magnetic Pulleys and/or Plate Magnets. Finer ferrous metal separation is possible using stronger magnetic systems such as Magnetic Drums and even Rare Earth Roll Separators. Metal Detectors are commonly used as a final stage of separation to remove small amounts of ferrous or non ferrous contamination.

The type of separator is entirely dependent upon the separation objective and is usually selected after a review of the recycling project by one of the Eriez trained sales engineers. This often involves testing at the Eriez laboratory in the European headquarters near Cardiff. All Eriez equipment is manufactured in the UK.
