Fluid Coupling Problem

we are using pembril make delay fluid coupling pulleys for our gundlach crusher.i have joined my plant two years back .i discovered that fabricated pullers were used to dismount fluid couplings from motors.when i enquired, fitters told me that they had tried with extraction bolt without success. They have made habit of fabricating pullers everytime fc has to be removed.i then once tried extraction bolt but could not dismount the motor.thing is that during use of puller sometimes pulleys get dammaged.

any suggestions for dealing with this problem

Without more detailed damage reporting, its hard to say.

You could install a davit to support the coupling.

If the manufacturer's bolt tappings are inadequate then it sounds like dodgey shaft finish from day 1; compounded by the resultant misalignments.

Sir,

I have gone through your problem. The same task of removing DFC we have once encountered. Our fitters tried to pull the fluid coupling with Pullers which is not technically correct and may some times damage your coupling also.

You can remove the coupling with extraction bolt very easily which we have tried and were successful in Visakhapatnam Port Trust. As you tighten the bolt against motor shaft , coupling will smoothly come.

Before installing coupling apply some anti seizure compound such as Molykote on to motor shaft which will facilitate to remove the coupling easily when you remove coupling next time.

Sincerely

Ravi Kumar.

This is the common problem encountered durring dismantling fluid coupling from shaft...you can carry out the following method while dismounting with extraction bolt...

@ before inserting the extraction bolt apply thick layer of grease on the threads of the bolt.

@ if possible insert a small round piece of SS or any alloy steel plate inside the bore of fluid coupling hub. see that this piece rests properly at the tip of the motor shaft where the extraction bolt is going to touch. Note that the tip of motor shaft has internel threads to hold the mounting bolt and the end of extraction bolt enters and grips inside this hole. Also see that this metal piece does not touch the sides of hub bore.

@ Periodically tap the head of extraction bolt as you tighten.

Never use puller as it increases the risk of housing breakage...also not good for bearings.

Try this and let me know incase of any problems.

yes...and also durring mounting apply thin layer of any lubricating oil on motor shaft.

1) refer to fluid coupling manufacturers instructions

2) if you haven't got any, check the coupling for the manufacturer, then contact them for instructions

3) if there is no manufacturer marking, post a sketch to illustrate coupling and how it is mounted
