Efficient dust control for belt conveyor transfer points

Sandvik’s electrostatic dust suppression system HX410 is an electrostatic dust binding device for bulk material conveying systems, developed and widely used in Europe. It offers a guaranteed dust suppression rate of over 90%, and has now been launched in Australia and South Africa by Sandvik Mining and Construction.

The system is ionization-based and has been designed to bind dust where it is formed. It is a simple system with very low operating and maintenance costs, offering many benefits in comparison to conventional “suction-through-filter” or “water-spraying” systems. It is suitable for retrofit as well as installation on new conveyor systems.

HX410 is a modular construction that reliably ensures that chutes are not a source of dust emission anymore. Especially at the transfer points from one belt to another the dust contained in the bulk material is blown into the air. In order to stop the dust from spreading all over the conveyor area the system is installed right after the chute on top of the belt.

Bulk and dust are led through the housing of the HX410 where a corona electrode inside the system ionizes the air. By collision of the air molecules with the dust the particles get electrostatic charged and drawn towards the housing and towards the bulk material.

A vibrator periodically shakes the housing so that the dust particles fall off and back into the process (on the conveyor).

The corona electrode is fed with high voltage and low currency.

The power requirement is below 500W and maintenance time is less than 1 hour per month.

The system picks up particles in the range of 0.01 to 100 µm. The efficiency for an average particle size of 5 µm is always above 90%.

Advantages of Sandvik’s electrostatic dust suppression system:

•Dust suppression > 90%

•Simple modular construction

•Short installation time

•Low power consumption < 500W

•No wear

•No suction, no filters

•Minimum waste of material

•Low maintenance costs (no qualified workers required)

•Low costs of operation

•No disposal costs

•No change of material properties

Application area of the system

All bulk material transfer points in industries as: mining, steel, cement, foundries, glass, paper as well as in the aggregates industry. Not suitable for explosive dusts!

Basically there are two different standard system sizes available. One from belt width 400 – 650 mm and one from 800 to 1400 mm. For belt width > 1400mm custom made constructions can be realised.

At the time there are approximately 170 units in operation in various applications world wide.
