What sort of fertiliser rate (m3/hr) and density (kg/m3)?

What sort of fertiliser, powder, granular, moisture content... ?

How much plastic in the fertiliser? ■

Would suggest some type of rotary sifter with air assistance to "float" off the low density plastic from the higher density fertiliser.. ■

Designer has it correct. Use a rotary drum with lifters and air flow through through the drum. Adjust the air flow until the plastic comes out with as little product as possible.

This method is used to remove plastic bits from compost & wood chips.

Your application might be a bit tricky becasue of the fine product size, so adjustable air flow & bolt in lifters that can be replaced easily should be designed in. ■

The simplest way to get rid of unwanted "tramp" plastic bits is to let the fertilizer flow through a vibrating tramp screen, and remove the tramp over the screen deck.

A wire mesh screen with 5mm hole size will sieve out the rubbish quite nicely on dry Ammonium Sulphate.

We need to know the plastic particle size distribution. Maybe a high portion is smaller that 5x5mm.

Also, we need to know which will pneumatically float first, plastic or smaller fertilizer particles. Pneumatic separation can only be done if the plastic will float first for the given induced pneumatic turbulence. ■

Would it not be a good idea to prevent the plastic getting in, in the first place. 2kg per ton seems rather a lot of plastic.

Is the ammonium sulphate delivered in plastic bags or something?

How and where is the plastic added? As Graham said, you have to remove it somewhere, maybe its better to do so at the source.

Are you buying the bulk to get delivered and only take ownership when it leaves the ship? ■
