Karlsruhe, October 26, 2007 - Innovative information services have been FIZ Karlsruhe‚s core business for 30 years now. As a service partner to science and business, the non-profit service institution and member of the Leibniz Association (WGL), supports information transfer and knowledge management for research. On October 24, FIZ Karlsruhe celebrated its anniversary at Bruchsal Palace with guests from politics, science and business, including guests from Europe, the USA and Japan.
"International customers, progress-oriented business partners and long sighted sponsors from science and politics are the pillars FIZ Karlsruhe‚s success on the dynamic global information market is based on. We are therefore pleased to be able to celebrate our anniversary with guests who collaborate with FIZ Karlsruhe in developing modern information infrastructures for research,‰ said Sabine Brünger-Weilandt who has been FIZ Karlsruhe‚s President and CEO since 2003.
Since 1977 - long before the internet made its triumphant advance in the late 1990s - FIZ Karlsruhe has been developing online technologies and methods for providing global knowledge to scientists and information specialists edited specifically for research purposes. Today, FIZ Karlsruhe has an excellent reputation for its well-edited and comprehensive offer of facts and information on scientific topics and patents from all over the world. Its international reputation is based on an excellent customer support, intense networking with renowned international information producers, and powerful tools for retrieving, analysing, editing and procuring high-quality information.
Today more than ever, global networking and an increasing mobility require scientific knowledge to be made accessible independent of the place. In the past 30 years, FIZ Karlsruhe has successfully played its role as a service provider for science and business and has gained itself a firm position in the national and international information markets,„ said MinR Hermann Riehl, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in his welcome address.
FIZ Karlsruhe plays an important part in the German scientific community: Top research needs a powerful, innovative infrastructure which supports scientists in procuring information, in communicating, collaborating and publishing. "This is precisely what our new E-Science services are intended for. Our main target groups for the time being are universities and research institutions," Sabine Brünger-Weilandt described the objective of the new business area.
"E-Science is not only intensely dealt with in Germany, but also in the EU. The 10 statements on E-Science issued by FIZ Karlsruhe‚s management are a convincing basis for its new orientation in this area. As an acknowledged, neutral platform FIZ Karlsruhe is in a good starting position for establishing itself as an innovative service institution, said MinDir Julian Würtenberger, Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts, Baden Wüttemberg, in his welcome address.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernst Th. Rietschel, President of the WGL, outlined the role of scientific services within the Leibniz Association (WGL) and summarized: "The institutes of the Leibniz Association combine excellent research and scientific services under the motto ‚Im Fokus der Mensch‚ (Focusing on Man). In this respect, FIZ Karlsruhe is a model institution of the Leibniz Association."
The highlight of the celebration in Bruchsal was the lecture held by the conductor and musical producer Christian Gansch on the topic "Continuity through Renewal."
The Orchestra as a Model for Success.
With numerous musical examples Gansch drew parallels between work processes in an orchestra and those in a business enterprise. For this, Mr. Gansch, who has been awarded the "Grammy" several times for his musical work, analysed the communication structures and precise workflow in orchestras. His suggestive and surprising examples illustrated how inspiring and sensible it can be to transfer problem solving strategies from orchestras to enterprises. After this exciting and entertaining lecture, the evening was characterized by lively conversation.
