An ambitious project
The project that ARCELOR presented consisted of 33 cranes in total. Out of them, some had to be dismantled, transported from the old facilities in the Picarral district of Zaragoza, and reinstalled at the PTR by the TAIM-TFG team. Others, however, were brought from the group’s other plants. This was the case of the 180 t-capacity furnace charging crane which TAIM-TFG dismantled and transported from Charleroi (France) to Zaragoza, so that it could be rebuilt and operated at the new plant.
As well as this recycling of used machinery, TAIM-TFG was in charge of supplying and commissioning 11 new cranes.
To handle scrap metal, the new plant has 2 outdoor gantry cranes, with 40 m span and 30-t capacity. To transfer the scrap metal to the Melt Shop, 2 130-t capacity basket transfer cars were installed. The process now uses a crane that loads furnaces with capacity for 200/50 tons. For billet handling inside the ARCELOR buildings, 4 new 25-t overhead cranes have been installed, as well as another 2 25-t cranes to handle hot billet.
TAIM-TFG, S.A. was set up in 1973 following the merger of two companies, TAIM, S.A. and TFG, S.A., founded in 1953 and 1899 respectively.

THE FACILITY THAT TAIM-TFG SUPPLIED FOR
ARCELOR LAMINADOS IN ZARAGOZA IS COMMISSIONED
The eleven production cranes that form the scope that TAIM-TFG supplied for ARCELOR LAMINADOS ZARAGOZA’S new steelworks are in use and operating. With the new plant, located in the Recycling Technology Park (PTR in Spanish) in Zaragoza, the iron and steel company aims to double its steel production in Zaragoza.
ARCELOR is renewing its trust in TAIM-TFG by choosing the company from Aragn to supply the 11 new production cranes for its recently opened plant in Zaragoza, located in the Recycling Technology Park (PTR). TAIM-TFG is highly experienced in the supply of heavy duty cranes for the iron and steel sector. Its trading relations with ARCELOR go back several years. This is a loyal client for whom the company has supplied many cranes, both for the Zaragoza plant and other plants within the group. These have prompted the iron and steel company to place its trust in TAIM-TFG once again.
The project started at the end of 2005 when the construction of two new facilities was begun. Now, the ARCELOR LAMINADOS ZARAGOZA factory is built in a 22-hectare plot of land, inside the PTR. This is a newly-built park with a surface area totalling 411.48 hectares in which several companies involved in recycling and the use of second-generation materials are setting up.
At the new plant, ARCELOR LAMINADOS ZARAGOZA manufactures long steel products such as beams, bars, and an entire range of profiles for buildings. Its annual production totals around 450,000 tons of steel, although this is expected to reach 800,000 tons between now and 2012.
The new location in the PTR guarantees ARCELOR LAMINADOS ZARAGOZA supplies of raw materials, since 40% of the steel that the iron and steel multinational manufactures per year comes from scrap metal. It is estimated that 80,000 trucks per year will arrive at the new facilities carrying scrap steel that comes from companies that specialise in recycling cars, electrical appliances, etc.
