Unaceptable noise on drag conveyor

Posted in: , on 13. Sep. 2007 - 23:28

Hello Gentlemen,

We have very noisy new flat bottom drag conveyor in bentonite (60lb/cu.ft) with the following specs:

- 14'' width, 105 ft length,

- cap. 6,300 cu.ft/hr, chain speed 80ft/min

- 40hp

- UHMW 1/2'' flights

- WR132 chain

- cassing HRS 10Ga and bottom HRS 3/16''

- one inlet and 5 intermediate outlets

- supported on a not very rigid steel structure above 5 corrugated silos

- there si no steel on steel contact.

The product is very dry and abrasiv. The conveyor is very noisy in both full and empty conditions.

Do you have some experience in handling dry bentonite with drag conveyors?

Thanks,

There is some evidence that dry bentonite results in stick/slip motion in the conveying chain.

1) do an octave band noise analysis to establish the frequency of the offending noise (a simple dbA value is not sufficient).

2) check the alignment of the conveyor it should be straight and level (use a piano wire for straightness).

3) check that the chain does not contact the sides when running (take off the top covers and observe).

4) check that the chain is supported off the bottom plate (has it got a wear rail).
