Online truck wheighing

Posted in: , on 24. Aug. 2007 - 02:19

We are interested in online off-road truck wheighing systems. Load cells to be installed on trucks to wheigh truck payload.

In fact we are looking a way out to determine truck payload in an open pit iron ore mine. The trucks are used to haul both waste and ore. The overall tonnage (waste and ore) is calculated based on land surveying and the average mass volume of materials and the hauled iron ore is estimated according to average truck capacity and number of travelling passes. We need a more accurate online method to determine the tonnage of hauled material i.e. ore/waste.

I though (and have been wrong previously) that most trucks would have this fitted as standard.

What about a retrofit - contact the OEM / aftermarket suppliers?

You can procure weigh bridges for the trucks to trundle over onroute to where ever they are heading.

It certainly isn't standard across all trucks but is certainly possible and not uncommon to have onboard truck weighing.

There are a number of manufacturers, just Google it, you should have no problem finding a manufacturer with a local agent or your truck supplier is likely to have a manufacturer who has supplied for his trucks before and already has the necessary adapters designed.

Dear Sir,

If you are using pay loaders to load the trucks, it is better to install weighing systems on the payloaders instead of mounting weighing systems on each & every truck. This will save the cost a lot.

Thanks & regards

This is a very very good idea. Quite breathtaking in its simplicity; which is always the best way. There are a lot of dynamics within the payloader so it might be better if you can install the loadcells around the bucket itself.

Online Truck Weighing can be solved by installing special type of weighing scale which works on the principle of torsion of metal. This will be installed at main beam of the chassis of

each trucks. When the truck is filled, as per the requirement, this scale which is mounted on the chassis of trucks will give signals which can be of various types.

Any comments--

This ideas were very good. and its greatest benefit is the speed with which you're able to advise on vehicle configuration, in terms of payload, life cycle costs, performance, etc. Ive got a new prospect here !

I work with a company that makes axle loadcells for farm wagons. Likely they could make systems suitable for trucks.

Truck weighing are often an integral component of a company’s throughput and profit stream.Though its operations that weigh 10 trucks per day, those that weigh hundreds, truck weighing system both need the most accurate and reliable system which to ensure their business is both efficient and more profitable.

Simpler is better by the way:

Candidly I would be more worried about the 64 gallons per hour per OTR truck

in the fleet hauling overburden and payload ores.

The problem with load cells is they will break at the most unconvenient

times which is either at the loading point or during haulage to the waste

dump or the crushing station.

Weigh bridges are fine to a point-until it starts raining and the dust starts

congealing and the mud starts slipping around and falling into the pit and

builds up over time which will create havoc if you are seriously fuel conciuous

but using 64 gallons per hour at a (gross fifty percent efficiency) is a touchy subject

with me anyway when a pneumatic capsule pipeline can transport ores and

waste rock at 2 cents per ton mile or less.

I can and will tell you that a weigh lock which is used on both the Erie Canal and also on the Panama Canal is a simpler solution using a floating barge to carry the load of the haul truck while weighing is better solution if the ore deposit is an ore body with a long term extraction life.

You could simply have one weigh lock for overburden and one for payload ores and be done with it.

The technology is over one hundred years old and still works the same way reliably with simple instruments measuring displacement created by the weight of the object which would be the barge that is carrying the weight of the barge and the ugh!!, off the road truck AND

if there is dirt on the barge that is sloughing off the truck it will not matter or create havoc with weighing mechanisms.

Its simple enough to design a weigh lock with a stationary barge using low pressure compressed air air for ballast which rides up and down on four steel poles/columns that hold the barge in place as it rises from the floor of the weigh lock when water is pumped into it or gravity fed into it. after the barge is raised in the weigh lock the displacement created by the barge and the haul truck is measured as a standard barge would be measured for payload weight.

It is simple enough to log the machine number and dead weight tons on paper as well as the payload weight rounded to the nearest metric ton PER TRIP/CYCLE when it is weighed in a lock chamber prior to lowering the water level to allow the haul truck to pass through it.

When something is simple to operate and maintain the less it costs.

Nice discussion to take part in. I was wondering through the forum and then visit this thread having some quality sharing too. In fact it is not easy found such scale or to manufacture.

Hopefully you would be able to have such scales. Do share you after build experience...!

I further want to add here a source, hopefully you all guys will also enjoy it like me.
