Gravimetric small components dosing system to feed a batch mixer by GEL-Verfahrenstechnik GmbH & Co. KG, Germany

This new development was initiated by a number of complex demands made by our costumer: The new small components dosing system KKD 8/2.

Requirements:

- accurate and dust-free dosing of 10 differ-ent components

- gravimetric dosing at low tolerances

- batch volume: 30 kg from up to 5 com-ponents

- capacity: 15 batches per hour

Materials:

- powdery bulk materials, some of them with poor flowing characteristics

- fibrous materials

- hygroscopic materials

- materials tending towards creep compac-tion

A number of pilot tests have been run in our test plant with several short and long term trials using various discharge and dosing systems such as screws, vibro-chutes, fulling elements etc. Depending on the filling level inside the feeding vessels the test results showed great differences in weights and tolerances of the different materials.

These problems have been worked out by two different solutions. For to the powdery materials cone dosing valves (type RKV 250) were used with great success. The fibrous materials could be handled by means of vibratory conveying chutes combined with special mechanical discharge boosters.

The materials had all kinds of flowing characteristics. Some of them had a tendency towards shooting or were also hygroscopic or had a tendency towards agglomeration. Others tended to harden after some time. The RKV dosing feeders achieved accuracies between 10 and 100 g with all these different materials and allowed reliable dosing within a reasonable time.

The RKV dosing feeders thus meet all the demands for constant mixture qualities, for high dosing accuracy and repeatability as well as for a reliable and smooth bulk mass flow. Storage time and filling height inside the feeding vessel is nothing to worry about any more.

Furthermore the RKV are very easy to assemble, clean and service.

Thanks to the modular design of the dosing station the system is ready for all kinds of new applications.

The photo shows the round arrangement of raw material containers including three feeding vessels with the RKV dosing feeders. You can also see a travelling vessel scale and the driving station below.

The small plant is equipped with a process control system where the individual recipes are saved. The recipes consist of up to 5 individual components per mixture.

In order to dose a certain component the respective powder vessel is moved above the dosing position of the travelling scale. The outlet of the dosing valve is connected to the outlet of the dosing unit in a dust-tight manner. After the requested weight has been dosed, the vessel scale moves to the discharge position, makes a dust-tight connection and discharges the material into the mixer.

To be able to precisely maintain the discharge position on the linear and circular travelling path, automatic positioners adjust and secure the correct position of the scale.
