BS 1042 use a pratical version of equation as follow:-

Q = e x E x CD x A2 x Sq root of (2xD(P1-P2)) where

e - expansion ration or expansibility factor

E - velocity of approach factor = 1/sq root of (1-A2/A1)

CD - Discharge Coefficient = 0.6 for orifice plate

D = Density

P1,P2 - Pressure

Q - Gas Mass Flow Rate

Question:-

a) Does anyone knows how to determine e for both air and nitrogen?

b) ISO 5167 also has an equation to size the orifice. Does anyone knows of the equation and its regression method?

I haven't used BS 1042 since 1969 so I'm not sure if e has been dropped out of (any) subsequent (assumed)editions. It used to be included.

ISO, I don't know.
