Continuous Splice Monitoring

I am currently involved in the design of a nickel mine and met plant and our client has expressed an interest in a continuous splice monitoring system for the belt conveyors. Apparently this system uses sensors imbedded in the belt on either side of a splice and monitors the distance between to determine if the spliced area has stretched.

Has anyone heard of this technology before? I'm interested in who would supply this system and whether it has been used successfully before in similar applications.

The project I'm working on incorporates several belt conveyors, including two overland conveyors of around 6km in length each.

Cheers

The method your client described just proves that if there is a hard way to do a job somebody will find it. Embedded sensors are not necessary. Adapt rope monitoring methods. Magnetise all the strands all the time. Changes in the magnetic flux can then be observed to indicate broken wires as well as longer times for the splice to pass the stationary sensing coils.

If the belt is fabric then you can easily measure abnormal displacement at the take up.

I trust the other respondents do something similar.

Embedded sensors? Come on lads; scraper fodder just waiting to happen!

There are several manufacturers of this system, including belt manufacturers (e.g. ContiTech). There are also companies that have systems that are left in place and monitor the complete belt through telephone/internet/computer services.

I would like to suggest that if there are issues about splicing capabilities...when you install the belt only use a certified splicing company, with the conveyor belt manufacturer's rep on site monitoring the splice.

In Australia I have heard of a supervisor named Bruce Baker that has been used by many of the major belt manufacturers (e.g. Goodyear) in different parts of the world.

Anytime I hear of these systems, it makes me think that the end user will not perform normal inspections and maintenance and will only react when something breaks!
