DMN – WESTINGHOUSE Hastalloy Rotary Valve the Best Option

DMN-WESTINGHOUSE have built and supplied an AL150 rotary airlock in Hastalloy to Carlisle Process Systems of Huddersfield. The valve is used to discharge highly accurate quantities of Pharmaceutical product from a filter dryer into continuous liner kegs in a system installed at Laboratories Merck Sharp & Dohme – Chibret at St. Germain Laprade in France.

The DMN-WESTINGHOUSE AL150 was designed with a special, shallow vane, multi pocket rotor and driven by an accurate, variable speed drive in order to achieve the required feed accuracy of +/-50gm. The CPS control system allows for the variations in product density and adjusts the rotary valve speed to ensure that this level of accuracy is consistently maintained.

Despite the majority of the system being manufactured with stainless steel 316 contact parts, the construction of the rotary valve required special consideration due to the fact that product would be held in the valve during changeover of kegs below it. The corrosive nature of the product, together with the anticipated valve dwell time, meant that superior corrosion resistance to stainless 316 was necessary.

DMN-WESTINGHOUSE produced the valves to order with all contact parts in Hastalloy, including the valve body and rotor, working closely with both Carlisle Process Systems and Laboratories Merck Sharp & Dohme – Chibret. This co-operation ensured that the valve not only achieved the required performance but was also delivered within a very tight timescale, crucial to the commissioning schedule of the overall plant. In fact the valve was supplied ahead of schedule with a second valve cast by DMN-WESTINGHOUSE as a back up to allow for unforeseen commissioning issues and future spares coverage.

The system is designed to maintain a maximum OEL of 10 microg/M3, but it is also easy to strip to allow quick access for maintenance, including the rotary valve which has an easily removable rotor.

Most know DMN for their renowned portfolio of DMN WESTINGHOUSE rotary valves. It is one of the most extensive available anywhere in the world. It comprises airlocks and blowing seals with a full range of surface finishes including mirror polishing for dairy, pharmaceutical and food applications. They can be constructed in a variety of materials including cast iron, aluminium, stainless steel, Ni-hard, ceramics plus, of course, hastalloy. For those applications demanding the ultimate in hygiene and frequent cleaning, DMN offer models with quick disassembly features and slide rails to support the weight of the rotor and end cover. Besides an extensive range of standard versions, DMN supply components that conform to USDA requirements, pressure shock resistant to 10 bar, flame proof and ATEX compliant to Directive 94/9/EC.

As a service to customers, DMN UK also offer a refurbishment facility for its valves and can return worn equipment to original manufacturing specifications. All refurbished equipment carries the same comprehensive warranty and back up service as for new valves.
