Easy. Welcome to the Document Control Empire overview.

Just stuff a few ring binders with the gearbox, motor, bearing & switchgear brochures. Attach a few of your nicer drawings along with a list of recommended lubricants. When it looks fat enough finalise the index & make the rest of the copies to satisfy the document controllers, (not as easy as it sounds that one). Once you've got it past those pompous clowns you can relax because nobody of consequence has the time or inclination to read them until its far too late in the day. That is because anybody with a vested interest in the machine has already gained the necessary knowledge during the tender, design & construction stages.

I've seen 22 pallets worth of O & M manuals disappear without trace & the power station kept on running.

Somehow I doubt that the season of goodwill to all men extends quite that far.

To those who clearly don't know what they are doing I can only suggest that you do not do it!

Try to build something far less demanding.

Dear all, above,

just want to support John @ 2006,

and to add: Well yes, most (only most) of the contents of such manuals may be looking like copy&paste stuff. However, there's niceties to observe, as specific safety requirements, specific design / maintenance / checking hints (which I myself & personally always add to the input into these manuals) and last but not least the "safety is responsability" aspect.

Come to think of it, I always read the relevant chapters before those manuals go out, it's kind of professional imo and also part of the safety-in-design process (all risks not completely cancelled out by design end up in remarks the like of "Do that..." or "Don't do that...". Ultimately, its a liability issue..

With a lifecycle of 20 years +, somewhen the experienced guys shall be looking at the machines from the other side of the fence, and the passing on of knowledge & skills, well this's another topic for discussion.

Regards

R.

Hello,

All the manufacturers of stacker and reclaimer machines will be giving maintenance manual to the user of the machines. I do not think that there would be any buyer who will make the final payment without getting copy of maintenance manual of the machine. So you can visit to some user of the machine whom you know, and he may show you the copy. This will give you fair idea about the English version of the maintenance manual of such machine.

The machine comprises of many items, sub-assemblies and assemblies. The gear box manufacturer will provide the maintenance manual of the gear box, the motor manufacturer will provide the maintenance manual of the motor, the hydraulic system supplier will provide the manual of the maintenance of the hydraulic system, and so on. As a designer and manufacturer of the machine you will be knowing how to remove or re-install concerned items, assemblies and sub-assemblies, so that machine remains stable and this activity does not over-stress any structure or member during this process.

If you can erect the machine and commission it, then there is nothing that would hinder you to make the maintenance manual. The creating of maintenance manual is very easy thing compared to design, manufacture and installing the machine.
