Material recognition by colour

Posted in: , on 30. Jan. 2006 - 08:52

Honourable members and technologists,

Is there a method by which on-line detection of material can be done by colour.

This will be similar to a metal detector on conveyor belt but since the material to be separated is non metalic and a type of stone and percentage in the main feed being only 1-2% and different in colour.

If any other method is available to remove such material and is working anywhere, please advise

Regards

Sorting by color is pretty common on fruits and vegetables. For example: sorting pepers between green and red.

You should try looking that direction.

Hi,

There could be 2 approaches here:

Is there a difference in particle size between the product and the material to be separated? If so then you could simply use an air classifier to separate the product.

We also have a system that can be used to monitor powders inline to detect any particles of a different colour - for example this method is used in flour production, but also in plastic product where the user is concerned with any off-colour particulates affecting the product's appearance.

If you send me an email: ben@merrowscientific.com then I will send you further details.

Regards

Ben

Dear mr Ben

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately we are dealing with solid materials mixed with stones and lump size vary from 10mm to 200mm. Hence air classification is ruled out.

Further, the conveyor speeds are upto 4.5m/sec and cpaacity is upto 2000 TPH.

Sorry if I am increasing the complexity of the issue.......(:-(

Thanks and regards

Dear Mr. Dilip,

For all kind of optical sorting I suggest you contact with MOGENSEN company in Germany. They are experts in that field.

Another possibility could be sorting based on x-rays.

If, for instance the material to be sorted out, is organic and the other one inorganic.

The only problem could be the very high capacity. I am sure they will let you know...

Please also take a look at their website:

or e-mail them:

info@mogensen.de

I hope this helped you.

We are using optical sensing to pick out rock in our salt as it travels along a conveyor belt. The link below shows what sensor we are using. It must have a very good light source due to the high speed.
