A WARM WELCOME FOR ANOTHER TWO „COOL“ CRANES

Although winter time has reached many European regions – including Liebherr’s production facility for harbour mobile cranes in Nenzing/Austria – this is almost incomparable to current conditions in the Arctic port of Dudinka. With its vicinity to the river Yenisey as well as being close to the Arctic circle, such Russian port is characterised by some rather unique circumstances.

In winter time, temperatures go down to unbelievable values in the range of -60°C! In spring time, when the thick ice layer on the river melts, most parts of the terminal area are being completely flooded.

Such extraordinary circumstances also had to be taken into account when in spring 2000 the Liebherr group met the port management to offer suit-able crane equipment for their particular handling needs. After thorough investigation by the technical department in Nenzing, a crane concept was presented to the terminal operators which was designed to withstand arctic temperatures as well as to cope with the melting water in spring times.

The main features of such “cool” crane comprise a completely new steel construction using special low temperature steel material (standard steel would literally break like glass under such conditions!), a substantial arctic package including a special preheating arrangement of the diesel power pack and the hydraulic system, a remarkable upgrade of the engine room and standstill heating, the exchange of various hydraulic components like cylinders and valves and special operator’s cabins equipped with double glazing – not to forget two extra driven (instead of non-driven) axle sets to move the crane up a steep ramp when the water levels rise in spring time.

Having been convinced by the work of Liebherr’s design department, RAO Norilsk Nickel, the Russian metal giant and terminal operator at the Port of Dudinka signed a contract for two units LHM 250 which were handed over to the customer in October 2001.

Meanwhile 4 years have passed – more than enough time for the cranes to prove their quality and endurance under severest environmental conditions! This has prompted RAO Norilsk Nickel to sign a follow-up order for another two units LHM 250 which were officially put in operation during last month.

The impressive hand-over ceremony was personally attended by the man-aging director of Liebherr-Werk Nenzing, Mr. Walter Länge who thanked everyone involved for the support and professionalism during the project phase. He also emphasized the challenge for the Liebherr company to design and manufacture a crane concept which was supposed to set a new milestone in harbour mobile crane technology.

Management of the port stressed the importance of the now 4 harbour mobile cranes in the port of Dudinka which play a key role in the trade routes to the near-by regional capital Norilsk while being confident that the new equipment would substantially boost cargo handling figures.
