Conveying out of a small deep hole?

Posted in: , on 26. Sep. 2005 - 07:43

Can someone put on their thinking caps and help me with this customer request.

Has an excavation, a hole, nominal 100 square feet by approx 60 feet deep. Wants to dig out the sand and clay at the bottom and economically get it to the top. Would be thrilled at 100 ton per day rate.

RAMP with truck?

Special drop in conveyor to bring up to a bench half way up or?

Cleated, boxed conveyor type to positively bring it up at a very steep angle OR?

This is a downtown, major metro area hole and this situation comes up relatively often.

CAN you folks help here? Thanks George baker

A possible solution would be to utilise a Hywall elevator, (conveyor belt with side walls and cross cleats). This would be particularly usefull if the hole is to remain at a constant depth during the requirement to move materials. It would have the advantage of taking only a small space envelope.

With this type of elevator, the angle can be from horizontal to vertical, indeed for the project described, it would probably be an advantage to design the hywall elevator such that it runs horizontal at the feed point, turns to lift the material vertical, followed by a horizontal section to discharge the material above ground level. This can be achieved with just one conveyor elevator. The tonnage rate required is very low, and can be handled comfortably by this type of arrangement.

I hope this is of some assistance, and good luck in finding a solution.

Kind Regards

Hello George

Another option would be to use a bucket elevator.

Small Hole -Big Problem

Hello George,

Just in case you did not get my phone message,

One other method would be to drive pilings, dig and flood the compartment at the same time to move material as able with a clam shell bucket or long reach excavator back hoe.

A large diameter auger drill would be the quickest way to excavate the shaft in question using the pilings as a muck guide to the auger. This would give you a shorter set up and finishing time, handling the spoil is messy unless you use a desilter and bentonite to settle out solids and reuse the water to help move the material- a fire hose could be used to wash the spoil to the auger. Not knowing the size of boulders or large rocks is the deciding factor.

Hiring an auger driller is probably the fastest way since you are dealing with only 6000 cubic feet of material and an auger would be able to set up quickly and use large diameter casing as the method of excavating the material- the Foremost drill folks in Calgary have a track mounted auger drill that would be perfect for this

The sidewalled conveyor seems to fit my customer needs most economically.

I brainstormed with him and actually said.......heyyyyyy why not slurry the sand/clay soil and pump out to the top. The govt guidelines will NOT allow changing the makeup of the soil prior to removing. I thought we could easily just SOAK it with a fire type monitor system ........MAKE SOUPY AND PUMP. but it is not allowable by the rules.

Bucket elevator system seems not to be as readily acceptable to my contact for some reason.

THANKYOU all for the help.

George, I forgot to mention that he could auger out the material dry as well-please let me know what he decided.
