Consistent Traceability in Production Processes

The Sartorius MIX-X5 system controller meets IFS requirements and EC Directives

May 4, 2005 – While having to offer a high degree of flexibility in terms of product variety, manufacturers in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries as well as in the fine chemicals branch must also meet the challenges posed by compliance with high safety standards and legally regulated accountability. EC Directives, the International Food Standard (IFS), the requirements of Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP) and the regulations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require traceability throughout all stages of a production process. At the same time, not only must the raw material batches be systematically traceable, but also the process steps and operators also have to be fully identifiable. Specifically for the food industry, German retailers have been developing the International Food Standard (IFS) since 2001.

IFS is a standardized audit reporting system for monitoring companies that produce or process foods. Therefore, the new Sartorius MIX-X5 system controller has been specially designed to support the IFS for the food industry in manual batching (dispensing) processes. With operator identification, material ID verification and raw material batch report generation and diverse label printing and reporting capabilities, the compact and easy-to-operate MIX-X5 provides a high degree of transparency in production processes.

In addition, use of the MIX–X5 ensures that process steps are precisely performed according to the prescribed regulations and standards. Accurate dispensing of the smallest quantities is facilitated by a bargraph display and operator prompts for intuitive guidance. As a result, this guarantees a high level of reliability in recipe accuracy and consistent quality. Savings in raw materials and prevention of waste reduce costs particularly when the recalculation feature is used.

By systematically implementing features to meet these market requirements, Sartorius is demonstrating its prowess yet again in developing innovative, compact and easy-to-operate products. Based on their high performance capabilities and high level of flexibility, Sartorius scales, balances, process controllers and, in particular, recipe management systems offer the possibility of meeting the demands for greater transparency and process reliability.
