Contraption to elevate powder by 4 meters

Dear Forum Members

We need to transfer about 60 kg/hr of starch from a metering doser to be located on the ground floor, to a receiving screw conveyor located about 4 meters above.

This contraption has to simply transfer whatever the doser dispenses.

An important pre-requisite is that the contraption be food grade and contamination resistant.

Thank you

A simple solution that could be made of food grade materials would be to use a flexible screw conveyor as per example in link below. There are many manufacturers around the world that build this type of conveyor.

Good luck

Another option is to use a "powder pump". This device is basically a low capacity pneumatic conveyor that can be used for materials ranging in size from powders to pellets. A well designed powder pump system will be contamination-free since it has no internal moving parts.

Dear Mr. Ahmed,

The simple and compact solution is to use suitable screw conveyor. It will require minimum space for installation, would be dust tight and likely to be economical and easy to maintain.

Amrit Argawal is right. His powder pump, also known as an "air-lift", is the simplest and cleanest way of doing this. Suppliers of pneumatic conveying systems can offer.

I cautiously disagree with Mr. Mulani. From my limited experience with vertical ball mills we find they do not seem to lift the charge.

We have modeled vertical ball mills using DEM and find the charge circulates upwards along the outer flights of the screw and down with gravity along the inner diameter of the screw.

Is it possible that a feed arrangement can pass product into the outer screw flight, convey it upward, and discharge it without any downward circulation?

Friction variance between the wall and screw move the charge forward. This is not so with a vertical lift. May be I am not well informed. If so, please give details of where this has been accomplished and by what dimensional details.

A small pocket flexwall belt can make this lift as can a small bucket elevator. The issue will be can it be made hygenically safe.

While appreciating Mr. Nordell’s reply, I inform as below :

1) I am referring to screw conveyor, which will have short pitch screw operating in close fitting tubular casing.

2) Such screw conveyor can have inclination around 60 degrees. Well known manufacturers show such arrangement for application.

3) The bulk material starch being non-abrasive, it will not pose a wear difficulty. It is not clear from the query as to how sticky the material is. If this is for food product, one has to also see the acceptability of screw or other conveyor for residual material. Provision for cleaning if residual (stale) material is objectionable.

4) The requirement is to lift the material by 4 m. I have presumed that 60 deg inclination to horizontal may be acceptable. I am not sure about use of screw conveyor for 90 deg inclination. 90 deg inclination will have difficulty in feeding and discharge.

5) Screw conveyor has one run unlike carrying run and return run for other items. So, it should be compact compared to others. It is also less in price.

I suggest Mr. Ahmed to refer to manufactures of screw conveyors and other chosen items for techno-commercial decision. Screw conveyor is only one of the solutions. I am not averse to other solutions, some of which could be better also.

Dear sir

Starch powder is very fine fluidizing material . Capacity required is 60 kg / hour Ie 17 gm per second that too from metering doser

We convey material in tones proper dosing of 17 gm/sec may not be feasible with our pocket conveyor or vertical screw conveyor

I have suggested tube type chain conveyor having round discs fitted with chain . these discs pulls the material in closed tube.this can be tried but i am not having any experence of starch
