Dear Mr. Singh,

I have seen once & gone through the book for a while.All information regarding testing of idler are avalable.I also tried hard to get that book. It is available with SAIL people. It was published for twice long time back. Mr.Kasturi was in NAIVALLY.I have seen with some of the TRF people but I did not request them.Now it is out of market.Or you can request FORUM member to give one copy if any body is having.

You proclaim Mr. Kasturi (sic), at Neyveli Coal, has developed a method to measure the behavior of idler roll friction with a test apparatus. Yet , when another makes a request to obtain a reference to the topic you tell the requesting party that it is not available and that you are not well versed in its contents.

If this is so, why do you make such claims about idler measurements that cannot be used or verified? I believe Mr. Kasturi (sic) has published in Bulk Solids Handling. I do not recall he made specific references to idler drag testing procedures and equipment.

What specifically do you know about idler drag testing? What are the jigs used? What is the design and why one jig design over another? Many idler mfgr's. have designed one form or another to measure seal and bearing drag.

Please do not be arbitrary when you proclaim (expert opinion) specifics and state specifics. It is not helpful to mask fact for opinion. I hope this forum has a higher standard.

In fact, there are machines designed to measure idler seal, lubrication influence, temperature effects, and bearing drag by size, speed, roll force, roll diameter, et al. Many mfgrs. and acedemic institutions, aroiund the world, have made it part of their professional responsiblility to ascertain this data.

Hannover Univeristy, Germany and those they service, University of West Virginia, USA as well as many mfgrs. (Melco RSA,, Hewitt Robins USA, Stephens Adamson USA, Precismeca USA & Germany, et al.) have deveoped such apparati. CDI has also deveoped idler drag details and published the type of machines and their results.

Please enlighten me on my misunderstanding and I will appologize for not understanding your intent and facts. ■

I am glad that you have written to me.Sir, for first hand information this book is good as Mr Singh being INDIAN. I visited one idler manufacturing company in CHENNAI, INDIA, they developed one roller friction testing machine based on the method as described in the book.But I am not satisfied with that machine developed by them.

Yes, you are very correct that I am not thorough about this machine.

Sorry For the "very" late reply on the captioned subject.

I just like to inform all the concerned people that, I have the copy of Mr. T.S Kasturi' book, it has a very clear descrition of how to conduct the Friction Test on Idlers. It gives a series of mathematical formulae, from which the Friction Factor on any Idler can be calculated.

A machine developed on his recommandation, if properly developed , I think is working properly.

DIN 22112 gives a brief description of the machine used to measure idler drag. This system has also been used in SABS 1313 (South african Standard for idlers).

The book by Mr Kasturi was interesting and informative. The copy I had was titled Part 1 indicating additional publications. I was unable to establish whether another book (other than part 1)exists.

As mentioned by others most machines for this function are purpose built.
