Off centering belt

Posted in: , on 15. Feb. 2005 - 16:07

we are working on a new belt conveyor 50 meters long 600mm beltwide at 20 degres idler through and having problem on centering of the belt. After tensioning and running the said conveyor, the belt keeps offsetting to one side starting at approximately 5 meters after the tail pulley considering that the drive and tail pulley is properly align and a no load run. We install a guide roller and it seems it corrected the problem a little bit. Should be this guide roller be a permanent part of the conveyor? What corrective measures should be undertaken to correct this problem? hope you could help me on this one

Take a careful look at the tracking.

The most relevant feature is the load station. I assume it is very close to the tail pulley. The following tthree points should be considered.

1. Look at the load impacting onto the belt. If the product hits one idler wing roll more than the other, the belt will be forced to respond and push downward on the dominant wing roll.

2. Look at the trajectory at impact that can detrain the belt with a sideways thrust

3. Local idler alignment in the vertical, tranverse and perpendicular alignment to the belt axis.

If the belt is empty:

1. remove or raise skirtboards to eliminate their possible misalignment to check if this is the influence

2. check idler alignment to be perdendicular to the belt within a few millimeters side to side

3. check to see if the idler plane of the center rolls are horizontal to earth

It seems obvious that the belt is forced to the mistracking position. Having such a short belt, there are not many options.

If everything is aligned as you say, then check that the idlers are installed the right way round.

Go to the Scandura website below and check out the "troubleshooting" section and also the "Care and Maintenance" section has a start-up check list that you can follow as well as proper belt training technics.

Guide rollers are only masking the problem and should only be used as a temporary fix until the real problem can be resolved. These type of rollers can cause more harm than good over time, as they will continuously wear away the edge of the belt.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Tracking a belt starts with having the correct belt for the application. It must rest fully in the trough both in the loaded and unloaded condition. Check for square splice and belt camber. Crooked splice will show as quick side to side movement, belt camber is when the belt is banana shaped.

Many other factors could cause a belt to tyrack poorly. See section 15, page 162 of Foundations III by Martin Engineering for additional information on tracking a belt.
